Warren Helstedt , 91, Minot, died Friday, September 22, 2017 in his home.
Warren was born January 16, 1926 in Lake Hester Township of McHenry County, near Bergen, ND to Walter and Inez (Haga) Helstedt. He was raised and educated in Bergen and Velva.
Warren was drafted into the US Army on October 25, 1944. He served his country honorably and was awarded a Bronze Star for his distinguished service during World War II. He was discharged November 22, 1946.
He returned to North Dakota and started working at Sweetheart Bakery in Minot. In the fall of 1949, he went to telegraph school in Minneapolis. The Soo Line Railroad came calling in 1950. Warren spent the next 38 years devoted to his occupation, retiring in 1988 as an agent operator.
Warren wed the love of his life, Beverly Gregerson on November 22, 1953 in Minot. They resided in Bergen and Drake for a couple of years until moving to Kief. They spent a majority of their working years in Balfour and Harvey until moving to Minot in 1988.
Warren was a past member of First Lutheran Church in Harvey and Balfour Lutheran Church, where he served as a treasurer. He also served as the secretary/treasurer for the Bergen Cemetery. He also served as the Mayor of Balfour for 10 years. Warren was currently a member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church in Minot and was a former member of Augustana Lutheran. Following a school reunion, Warren was honored to receive an honorary diploma from Velva High School at the age of 75. He carried a 38-year membership of BRAC and was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Aerie, and Souris Valley Men's Golf Association, all of Minot. Warren participated in the Honor Flight that traveled to Washington DC in 2009.
In his spare time, Warren enjoyed golfing and traveling but everything took a backseat to his grandchildren's activities. He was also a 27-year volunteer of the Hostfest. He will be deeply missed by all who shared in his life.
Warren's loving family includes his loving wife of 64 years, Beverly, Minot; children, Pam (Kevin) Spear, Kief, ND, Timothy (Debra) Helstedt, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Andrea Spear, Kief, ND, Amanda (Mike) Swartz, Harwood, ND, Eric (Ella) Helstedt, Parker, CO, Danielle Helstedt and Tanner Helstedt, both of Minot; great-grandchildren, Alexandria and McKenzie Thompson, Isabella Tichy, Bristyn and William Swartz and Olive and Finn Helstedt; siblings, Donna (Merle) Holte, Velva and Sandra (James) Weigel, Beulah, ND along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Arlaine Durbin.
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017 at Bread of Life Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Thursday, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Bread of Life Lutheran Church or Trinity Hospice.
