Obituary

Dr. Warren George Allen , 96, of Deering and formerly of Minot, died on Thursday, October 12, 2017 in a Minot hospital.

Warren was born on October 10, 1921, in Deering, ND to Fred and Clara (Holo) Allen. He was raised in Deering and graduated from Deering High School. He attended Minot State Teachers College (now Minot State University) and the University of North Dakota where he earned both a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Administration and Political Science. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Sioux Empire College in Iowa.

In 1942 Dr. Allen entered the U.S. Army where he served as a medical administrative officer. After his honorable discharge from active duty in 1946, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve as Commander of the 311th General Hospital until his retirement from the Reserve in 1966. At his retirement from military service he held the rank of Major.

Warren married Marjorie Thorpe on August 24, 1952, near Antler, ND. They made their home in Minot where he worked at Minot State University as Professor, as Chairman of the Division of Education and Psychology, and finally as Emeritus Vice President for Academic Affairs. He retired from the university after 28 years there. After the flood of 2011, Warren and Marjorie finally moved to Deering, his beloved hometown.

Dr. Allen's record of public service is impressive and too extensive for review here. He was elected representative to the 40th session of the North Dakota State Legislature, was chairman of the ND Teachers Professional Practices Commission, chairman of the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation Board, and chairman of the ND Centennial Citizens' Day. Dr. Allen served as chairman of the ND State Parole Board and on the state Pardon Board under multiple governors. He worked with the Mid-Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross, including in Puerto Rico as part of the Hurricane Hugo relief effort. He was named to the Kiwanis Club Legion of Honor and served as sexton of the Bethel Cemetery near Deering. Dr. Allen has been included in many and various editions of Who's Who and in Outstanding Personalities of the West and Midwest . He was an active member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, served as a long-time Sunday school teacher, preached at many area churches, and hosted a Bible study in their Deering home.

Warren's family includes his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; children Fred (Sonia) Allen and Jo (Alden) Swan; grandchildren Hannah, Charles, Jesse, and Joseph (Fred's children), and Elliot, Isaiah, and Elizabeth (Jo's children); and great grandchildren Riley, Weston, and Nora Jo. Warren has several surviving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Lloyd, Max, Irene, Richard, Marie, Reuben, and Esther.

Service of Honor for Dr. Warren Allen: Thursday, October 19, 2017, 11:00am at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Minot.

Graveside Service : Thursday, 1:30pm at the Bethel Cemetery near Deering.

Visitation: Wednesday, 3:00-6:00pm at Thomas Family Funeral Home in Minot.
Memorials may be designated for the Bethel Cemetery Association.
