Walter C. Nicolaison, 93, Minot and formerly of the Max area, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 in a Minot Nursing Home.
Walter was born May 9, 1913 in Gasman Township of Ward County, North Dakota the son of Carl and Valborg (Anderson) Nicolaison. He attended country schools near Max and assisted with the operation of the family farmstead during his younger years. Walt was employed with the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and purchased the operation of the family farm in 1941, raising small grains and cattle throughout the years.
During the winter months, Walter had also been employed with Shimke Ice Company, Northwest Sales and Service Construction from 1947-1953. He worked for a time with Warner Construction, and was their first hired employee. Walter was united in marriage to Martha Schmidt on January 20, 1953 at Max. They made their home on the farmstead, north of Max, where they lived and farmed throughout the years until moving to Minot in 1993. Martha died March 27, 2006.
Walter and Martha had been longtime members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Max where he had served on the Church Council. He had been a member and supervisor for the Gasman Township Board, a director on the Max Fire Department, a charter member of the Minot Moose Lodge and former member of the Minot Eagles Aerie.
Walter is survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Del Marum, Minot, brother-in-law: Fred Schmidt, and sister-in-law: Emma Schmidt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Martha, and sisters, Eleanor and Mabel.
Funeral service
: Monday, February 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Max.
Interment
: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Sunday from noon - 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donor's choice.
