Walter Kreie, 91, Minot, died Tuesday, April 28, 2020 in a Minot hospital.
Walter Alan Kreie was born on March 27, 1929 in Brantford, ND to Walter and Grace (Hazlett) Kreie. He was raised and educated in Brantford and Hannaford and graduated from Hannaford High School in 1948. Following high school, he moved with his family to New Rockford where he assumed responsibility for the Fuller Brush route previously cared for by his mother.
Walter entered the U.S. Army on January 23, 1951 and served with the 24th Ordinance Unit of MM Company APO 301. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge on January 20, 1953 at Fort Lewis, WA. He returned to North Dakota and began his employment as a clerk with the Great Northern Railroad in Ray, ND.
Walter married Leah Goebel on June 27, 1958 in St Paul, MN. They made their home in Minot where he continued his career as a clerk with the Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1991.
Walter was a member of Minot First Church of the Nazarene. He loved his Lord, and this was shown by his service to the church where he served as Sunday School treasurer, taught a 6th grade boys Sunday School class, made home visits to the elderly shut-ins and was head usher for many years. Also, he was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Railroad Museum and was a former member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. He especially enjoyed checkers, traveling, collecting stamps and vinyl LP records which he loved to listen to during his retirement years.
Walter's loving family includes his wife of 61 years Leah; children: Roxanne (Tim) Wilhite of Aurora, CO and Randy Kreie and Jerrah Falden of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren: Jonathan Wilhite, Stephanie (Skyler) Wade-Onnen and Matthew Wilhite; sister-in-law: Glenna Sauter; nieces and nephews: Paulette (Bruce) Whitmore, Brian (Jana) Kreie, Lucy (Richard) Burman, Ginny (Ed) Larson, Patty Ingelson, Alan (Judy) Naumann, Eddie Naumann, Shawna Kreie, Darrin Kreie, Laren (Kay) Sauter, Gayleen Mattson and Gale Sauter and close family friend Becky Bissett.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Charles, William, Paul and Byron; sisters: Helen and Jean Kreie, Mavis Ridge and Nettie Leinhart, father and mother-in-law: Leo and Elise Goebel; sisters-in-law: Virgina and Gurene Goebel and brother-in-law: Clarence Sauter.
Public Celebration of the Life of Walter Kreie: Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Church of the Nazarene- Minot. Please observe all social distancing recommendations. Private Graveside Service: Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery- rural Mandan.
Visitation: Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Again, please observe all social distancing recommendations.
Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
