Walter LeRoy Hummel, 85, Minot and formerly of Garrison died on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in a Bismarck nursing home.
Walter was born on April 4, 1927 in Coleharbor to John and Anna (Wallentine) Hummel. He was raised and educated in Coleharbor and Underwood. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1945 and served his country in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1947. Following his discharge he returned to Coleharbor where he was employed at the Farmers Union Elevator.
Walter married Maxine Schumaier on June 20, 1948 in Beulah. They made their home in Garrison from 1948 until 1962 where he was employed by the Super Food Locker Plant and Super Valu. The family moved to Minot in 1962 where Walter worked as the Produce Manager at the Minot Air Force Base Commissary until his retirement in 1986. Maxine died on March 20, 2008.
Walter was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a member of the Germans from Russia organization, American Legion Posts in Garrison and Minot, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, Moose Lodge, Senior Bowling League and National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1377 all in Minot. He especially enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping, fishing, dancing the two-step and waltz and card playing. He was a whiz at math and usually won the card games. A personal highlight was a hole-in-one recorded in 2001 on hole number #3 at Apple Grove Golf Course. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Walter's loving family includes his children: Michael (Susan) Hummel of Bismarck, Don (Sherry) Hummel of Minot, Valarie Hummel (Marc Fridlund) of San Diego and Laurie (Daniel) Lafontaine of Plymouth MN; grandchildren: Bret (Yvette), Brandon, Brady and Joshua (Holly) Hummel; Monica (Brent) Haugen, Drew Schuster, Margo, Matthew and Marisa Lafontaine; nine great grandchildren; sister: Sylvia Brown of Bismarck; sisters-in-law: Elaine Hummel of Springtown TX and Noreen (Carroll) Erickson of Minot; brothers-in-law: Ray (Elaine) Schumaier and Jim (Joan) Schumaier both of Beulah and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters: Elsie Arndt and Arlene Jewell and brothers: Alvin, Carlyle and William and an infant brother Harold.
Celebration of the Life of Walter Hummel: Friday, January 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park Minot.
Visitation: Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Bethany Lutheran Church Foundation.
