Verlund Herman "Shorty" Larson, 92, Kenmare, formerly of Donnybrook, died on Thursday, December 19, 2013 in a Kenmare hospital.

Verlund was born on October 12, 1921 near Aurelia, ND to Herman and Edna (Schultz) Larson. He was reared on the family farm near Aurelia and graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1941.

Verlund was drafted into the United States Army on November 2, 1942 and was stationed in the Philippine Islands, Leyte and Okinawa. While in the US Army, he served as a Squad Leader in charge of 60 Millimeter Motor Squad. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on January 16, 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

Upon his discharge, he returned to North Dakota and pursued his career in farming on the family farm in Carbondale Township near Aurelia, ND. Verlund married Marjorie Holte on August 1, 1949 and following their marriage, they continued to make their home near Aurelia where they raised small grains and cattle. He retired from farming in 1982 and in 2009, they moved to Kenmare.

Verlund was a member of Donnybrook United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Clarence McCormack American Legion Post 195 in Donnybrook for fifty-three years and also served on the Carbondale Township Board.

Verlund's loving family includes: wife of 64 years, Marjorie, Kenmare; daughter, Jill (Craig) Neuenfeld, Kenmare; sons, Kent Larson, Donnybrook, Cory Larson, Williston, Kevin (Jeanne) Larson, Harwood; grandchildren, Matthew and Kari Neuenfeld, Claire Engh, Kyla and Jordan Larson and Justin and Randy Mattern; sisters, Alverda Larsen, Ardella Johnson, Darlene (Earl) Stephan; brothers, Dale (Betty) Larson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Verlund was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dallas Larson, sister-in-law Esther Larson and brothers-in-law Paul Johnson and Warren Larsen.

Celebration of the Life of Verlund Larson: Monday, December 23, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday, December 22, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. until 5:0 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to Donnybrook Methodist Church or Donnybrook American Legion.
