Stanley Hillerud , 92, Velva, died Tuesday, October 6, 2020 in a Velva care center.
Stanley was born January 19, 1928 near Granville, ND to Stener and Anna (Johnson) Hillerud. He was educated in country schools in rural Genoa, ND and assisted on the family farmstead located in North Prairie Township of rural Velva during his childhood.
Stanley enlisted into the US Army on October 17, 1946. He served in Korea until his honorable discharge on April 10, 1948. He returned to his farming roots on the prairie following his service to his country.
Stanley was united in marriage to Kathryn Loftesnes on June 17, 1949 at North Prairie Lutheran Church. They made their home on his family's farmstead for the next nine years. They moved to Eugene, OR and spent a couple of years out west while he worked in the plywood mills. The prairie called him back in the early 1960s to manage the elevator in Norwich, ND.
He purchased the Isak Hystad farmstead in North Prairie Township and they would spend the next thirty-seven years on the farm, raising small grains and cattle. Kathryn passed away on April 28, 2002. Stanley retired in 2005 and moved into Velva in 2006.
Stanley was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway and the Velva American Legion. He served on the boards of the Farmers Union Elevator and the Granville Public School. He served as treasurer of Norwich Lutheran Church for eight years.
Canada was a special place to Stanley. He enjoyed many family fishing trips and milestone anniversary celebrations at Iskwasum Lake in Manitoba, Canada and Amisk Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. He enjoyed catching walleyes and northern pike. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour books.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Souris Valley Care Center for the loving care given to Stanley.
Stanley is survived by his children John (Nancy) Hillerud, Washburn, ND, Colleen (Verl) Bakken, Velva, ND, Roger (Denise) Hillerud, Bismarck, ND, Gary (Mary) Hillerud, Velva, ND and Karilyn (John) Avery, Little Falls, MN; eighteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren; sister Shirley (Harold) Harmon, Minot, ND; sister-in-law Ardelle Hillerud, Towner, ND, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
