Sid Coffin, 89, Minot, formerly of Velva, died Friday, April 2, 2021 in a Minot assisted living facility.
Sidney Burton Coffin was born at his Grandma Reed's house in Velva, ND on December 21, 1931 to William and Hazel (Reed) Coffin. He was raised near the Velva Mine, a coal mining community south of Velva, and attended country school through the 8 th grade. As a teenager, he began working on the family farm and milked cows for neighboring farmers. This experience led to a move to Mohall where he lived with his sister Alice and worked on a dairy farm. In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge in 1955, he returned to the Minot area and worked for Christ Struckness Construction.
Sid was united in marriage to Ardith Evenson on July 2, 1955 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. In 1959, Sid began working for Hildahl Painting & Decorating. When Allen Hildahl retired in 1982, Sid entered into a business partnership with Leonard Ostdahl, and the business became Coffin and Ostdahl Painting and Decorating. Sid was very proud of his work accomplishments. Some of his most memorable jobs included: Grand Hotel, Minot State University Dome, Hartnett Hall, Milton R Young Towers, Henry Towers, Minot High School, First Western Bank, Minot Federal Saving and Loan, and many stores in the Dakota Square Mall. He always enjoyed pointing out all the buildings and locations around the area that he painted. Sid valued all the acquaintances and lifelong friendships he made along the way. He could recall jokes and who he worked with from every single job site. Hard work and responsibility were traits he passed on to his children. Sid retired in 1990.
After retirement, Sid and Ardith enjoyed traveling in their motor home and loved spending their time at their lake home at Hideaway Point on Lake Sakakawea near Garrison, ND. They enjoyed spending time together gardening, fishing, and playing cards. Sid and Ardith both shared a passion for their grandchildren. Ardith passed away in 2010.
Sid was a proud member of Minot Painters Union, American Legion Post 26, VFW Post 753, and Moose Lodge #822. He was also a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Sid's loving family includes his children: Valerie (Brad) Wells, Cynthia (Steve) Beutler, Steve (Rini) Coffin and Jim (Sue) Coffin all of Minot; grandchildren: Jason Bratvold, Joey (Krista) Bratvold, Bethany (Justin) McCall, Ashley (Craig) Harvey, Stacey (Jonathan) Herreid, Katie (Jesse) Frey and Michael Coffin (and special friend, Heidi Rollinger); step grandchildren: Brannon (Amy) Wells, Tanner Wells and Cullen (Heather) Wells; eleven great grandchildren; sister Hazel Rogers and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters: Alice Solar, Lola Netzloff and Ruth Solar and brothers: Frank and John.
