Shirley D. Haakenstad, 91, Bismarck, formerly of Minot, died Wednesday, June 16, 2021 in a Bismarck Medical Center.
Shirley was born on March 16, 1930 at Grand Forks, North Dakota the daughter of Russel and Sadie (Moen) Lillico. She was raised at Nekoma by her father and grandmother after the death of her mother from tuberculosis at the age of 3 months. She graduated from Nekoma High School and then attended the Bottineau School of Forestry, where she met her future husband, Duane Haakenstad.
They were united in marriage on August 19, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Minot. They began their marriage living at Olympia, Washington, while Duane was stationed with the U.S. Army National Guard. She then lived at Bottineau until Duane returned from his service in Korea during the Korean Conflict. They moved to Minot in 1952. Along with raising their four daughters, Kathy, Marjorie, Mary and Debra, she was employed with the Minot Public Library Bookmobile for several years and Green Stamp Store. Duane died August 8, 2009. She had made her home at ProHealth Assisted Living for almost 2 ½ years, then the Baptist Home in Bismarck.
Shirley was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Minot, where she was active with the quilting group, birthday club and circle group. She was also active with the Son's of Norway, Hostfest and a local homemakers group.
Shirley's loving family includes , children, Marjorie Jean Taylor, Minot, Mary Lynn (Jari) Kariluoma, Bismarck, Debra Kay (Mark) Nelson, Minot; son in law, Bill Headrick, Minot; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 58 years, Duane, daughter, Kathy Headrick, infant son, Dwight, brother, Robert and grandsons, Christopher Taylor and Michael Taylor.
Celebration of Life service:
Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
