Obituary

Selmer Garvin Flom, 85, Burlington, formerly of Minot, died on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at his home.

Selmer was born October 7, 1932 at Wanamingo, Minnesota the son of Selmer M and Gurine (Huus) Flom. He moved with his family to Wabek in 1935. In 1941 they moved to Minot where he was raised and educated, graduating from Minot High School in 1950. He enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1953 and served his country during the Korean Conflict until receiving his honorable discharge in 1955.

Selmer returned to Minot, where he attended Minot State College. He purchased Crystal Cleaners in 1956, before selling the business a year later. He moved to Indianapolis, IN, where he owned and operated 2 Dairy Queens. He moved to Columbus, OH in 1960, where he owned and operated a Dairy Queen, 6 Bottle shops and a Cocktail Lounge. He sold the businesses in 1980 and returned to Minot. Selmer was once married to Dorene Helland.

After returning to Minot, he was employed as a car salesman at several local dealerships. He retired in 1995.

Selmer was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He spent much of his spare time attending local sporting events. He had served as a "Team Host" for numerous ND State Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments when these events were held in Minot. There were many local and state teams that made Selmer an honorary member of their team.

His loving family includes , sisters, Geanne Pankratz, Minot, Marvel Dornfeld, Kalispell, MT, Dianne (Kenny) Ostby, Fargo, ND; brother, Frank (Judy) Flom, Minot; sisters in law, Lois Flom, Las Vegas, NV, Mary Flom, Columbus; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Selmer was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lois Gruenberg, Mary Weiskopf, Odell, Duane, Gordon and Roger Flom.

Celebration of Life service : Monday, January 22, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Sunday, January 21st from 1:00 4:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

In lieu of flowers or plants the family prefers memorials to Minot Public Schools Foundation.
