Obituary

Rueben Osborne Rue , 92, Minot, died under hospice care on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at the home of his Daughter and Son-In-Law, Peggy and David Burckhard.

Rueben was born October 12, 1922, at Sheyenne, North Dakota to Carl and Ellen (Sandvik) Rue who were farmers in that area. He was raised on the family farm, educated in Sheyenne and graduated from Sheyenne High School in l941. He attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton in 1942 studying drafting and estimating. Prior to being drafted into the United States Army, he worked as an apprentice electrician for the Naval Supply Depot in Seattle, Washington.

He entered into active duty with the Army on April 21, 1943, and began serving his country at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He served in both North Africa and the European Theatre at Anzio, Italy, until receiving his Honorable Discharge on December 31, 1945. Rueben said the most comforting day of his life was when he returned to the United States by ship and saw the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor! He said, "Oh, what a day! There were cheers and tears!"

Rueben returned to Sheyenne where he was employed as an electrician for the REA, which brought electricity to rural farms in Eddy, Benson, and Wells Counties.

Rueben was united in marriage to Dorothy Hanson of Sheyenne on July 19, 1947. They lived in Sheyenne where Rueben continued as a licensed electrician, worked as a rural mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service, and managed the local Gamble hardware store. In 1958, he was trained by the U. S. Department of Agriculture to manage county Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) offices. This meant a move for them to Rolla, North Dakota, and later to Minot in 1962. Rueben retired in 1984.

The Rue family were longtime members of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, where he served on several church committees. He was also a member of the Minot VFW, American Legion, Eagles, and Golden K Kiwanis Club, where he had served as President. Rueben was an active member in Toastmasters of Minot and a former President of NARFE's Minot chapter. He especially enjoyed "ringing the bell" for the Salvation Army each Christmas. His hobbies included reading, yard work, camping, and fishing.

Rueben's loving family includes: Daughters, Jo Ann (Rick) Maj of Longview, Washington, Peggy (David) Burckhard of Minot, and Shelly (Mark) Wasser of Sterling, Virginia; Grandchildren and their spouses: Corrie Burckhard, Rachel (Khris) Walz, Angela (Eric) Shaw, Natalie (Mike) Haisley, Emily Burckhard, Joel (Cait) Burckhard, Paul Burckhard, Patrick Burckhard, Evan (Kim) Wasser, and Eric Wasser; nine Great-Grandchildren; Brother, James (Sue) Rue, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Sister-in-Law, Mary Ellen Rue, New Rockford, North Dakota, Brother-in-Law, Kenneth Johnson, Minot; and several Nieces and Nephews.
