Roy Millard Baugh , 66, of Deering and rural Newburg, died on Thursday, August 20, 2009, in his home near Newburg after a battle with brain cancer.
Roy was born on May 12, 1943 in Key Rock, West Virginia to George and Lillie (Blankenship) Baugh. He was reared and educated in Pineville, West Virginia and graduated from Pineville High School in 1961. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August of 1961. Roy married Margie Steele on February 4, 1963 in Pineville, WV. They made their home at or near various Air Force Bases around the world including: Lackland AFB, Texas; Chanute AFB, Rantoul, Illinois; Wright Patterson AFB, Columbus, Ohio; Vietnam; Otis AFB, Cape Cod Massachusetts; McClellan AFB, Sacramento, California; Iran; Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona; Grand Forks AFB, ND; and Wurtsmith AFB, Oscoda, Michigan. Following his retirement from the Air Force in September of 1981, they resided in Hatton, ND while he attended Mayville ND State College and the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND.
Roy then entered federal civil service at the Grand Forks Air Force Base, working in the missile fields with the RIVET MILE program before transferring to the Civil Engineering Squadron, Armed Forces Reserve Center in Minot, ND. After his retirement from civil service he was employed at Minot Air Force Base as a telephone operator with SWR Inc for the 5th Communications Squadron.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Jesse Kenney, his first wife Margie, his brothers: Robert, Luther, Jackie and James; sisters: Ruth Acord and Mildred Spencer; stepsister: Shirley Dunlap and granddaughter: Nichole.
Roy was a member of Deering Baptist Fellowship Church and served on the church board. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the American Legion and the Minot Rifle and Pistol Club. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, traveling, and mechanical work.
Roy is survived by his loving family which includes: his wife: Ruth (Shores) Baugh; children: Jennifer (Scott) Franks, rural Newburg; and Jesse (Faye) Baugh, Wishek, ND; sisters: Edna (Philip) Davis, Beckley, WV; Kay (Dallie) Lambert of Pineville, WV; brothers: George Walter (Frances) Baugh, Pilot Mountain, NC; William Edward Baugh, Taylor MI; Paul (Ruby) Kenney of Pineville, WV; sister-in-law: Bonnie Baugh of Pineville, WV; stepsister: June (Angelo) Gentiluccie of Wyers Cave, VA; grandchildren: Christopher (Teresa), Cassandra and Emily; great grandchildren: Jasmien, Jesse Roy and Margie Ann JeLynn; two granddaughters that were adopted: Stephanie Bell and Victoria Bell and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service:
Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m., with viewing starting at 1:00 pm. in Crossroads Baptist Church - Minot.
Visitation:
Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you send a donation to The American Cancer Society or your favorite charity in memory of Roy Baugh.
