Obituary

Ronald P. Hagelund, 78, Minot died on Friday, October 10, 2014 in a Minot nursing home.

Ron was born on November 23, 1935 in Austin, MN to Peter and Iva (Barton) Hagelund. He was reared and educated in Austin and graduated from Austin High School in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 16, 1955 and served as an air traffic controller aboard Navy ships until his honorable discharge on January 30, 1959. Ron was married to Luan Truax in Kenosha WI in 1961 and moved to Lansford, ND in 1972.

Ron married Sharon Hagelund on November 29, 1981 in Minot. They have made their home in Minot for many years where Ron was employed as a butcher at SunMart and Piggly Wiggly Grocery Stores and as a drummer in various bands at night and on the weekends.

Ron was a member of the Minot American Legion Post #26 and its Drum and Bugle Corps. He had a passion for building and flying model airplanes and is a member of the ND Air Museum and was very proud that some of his planes are on display. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and music. Ron played the drums during his career with the likes of Mel Tillis, George Jones, Bill Anderson and Willie Nelson.

Ron's loving family includes his wife of 32 years: Sharon; children: Kathy Schoettler of Lakewood CO, Tracy Hagelund (Diane Hartman) of Golden, CO, Michelle Hagelund (John Ellington III) of Denver, CO, Christy Hagelund-Mesa (Mark) of Cape Coral, FL, Suzanne Goggins (Joseph) of Prattville, AL, and Norman Hagelund (Donna) of Paynesville, MN; stepchildren: Joy Gilbert (Jeff) of Anchorage AK and John Bafia (Maggie) of Ft. Dix, NJ; grandchildren: Matthew Schoettler, Andrew Wise, Courtney, Hailey and Sara Widmayer, Aiden Gilbert, Navy Mesa, Mackenzie and Michael Bafia and Jennie Wigens; great grandchildren: Aurora Wilson and Bryson Coleman; mother: Iva Hagelund of Aitkin MN; brother, Richard Hagelund (Rosie), St. Ansgar, IA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ron was preceded in death by his father, Peter Hagelund and brother, Arnold Hagelund.

Celebration of the Life for Ronald Hagelund: Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Trinity Homes Chapel, Minot.
Visitation: Monday, October 13, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred.
