Obituary

Robert Wayne Whetter, 81, Minot and formerly of Mohall, died peacefully on Monday October 22, 2018 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Robert was born on April 14, 1937 in Bottineau, ND to James and Thora (Finstad) Whetter. He was raised on a farm in northwest North Dakota and attended rural schools prior to graduating from Mohall High School in 1956. He entered the U.S. Army on January 19, 1961 and received his honorable discharge on January 18, 1963. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and was accorded the Good Conduct Medal and a commendation for carbine marksmanship.  Following his discharge he returned to Mohall.

Robert married Linda Smith on December 28, 1968 at St. James Catholic Church in Sherwood, ND. They made their home in Mohall where he was employed on Main Street for more than 50 years at businesses such as Gamble's, Trutna's Department Store and Savelkoul Ford. Bob was a dedicated member of the Mohall community where he volunteered with or was a member of the Fire Department, Ambulance Service, Booster Club and American Legion Post. They moved to Minot in 2005 where his community service continued as a part-time employee of the Minot Park District and Thomas Family Funeral Home. More importantly, he spent countless volunteer hours at the Scandinavian Heritage Park doing a variety of tasks and treating the grounds as if it were his own yard.

Bob was a member of St. John The Apostle Catholic Church - Minot and a former member of the St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Mohall. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Scandinavian Heritage Association and a long time member of the American Legion Post 52 in Mohall, ND. Bob enjoyed spending time working outside especially on his garden and yard, and attending sports activities. He also enjoyed time spent with Linda at their home in Mesa AZ and with his granddaughter, Sophia, feeding the birds, gardening and sharing ice cream. Whoever met Bob always commented on his giving heart and how hard he worked.

Robert's loving family includes his wife of almost 50 years Linda; daughter: Wendy Howe (Lance Larson) of Minot; grandchildren: Sophia Larson, Casey Larson and Brady Larson; siblings: Donald (Judy) Whetter of Anthem AZ, Jim (Sharon) Whetter of Mesa AZ and Mary Nordmark of Minot; in-laws: Joann (Rick) Weigelt of Linton, James (Doris) Smith of Bismarck, Jeff (Trichele) Smith of Sherwood, Randy (Robbie) Smith of Sherwood, Mark Smith (Shawna Atwood) of Sherwood, Tracy (Mike) Vig of Mohall, Trudi (Blaine) Southam of Sherwood and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
