Obituary

Robert E. Gross, 76, Max, died Friday, February 16, 2007, near Max.

Robert was born September 24, 1930, in Atlantic City, NJ, the son of Master Sergeant (USMC) Forst and Alva (Kleinbeck) Gross. He was raised in Bear Mountain, NY.

Robert enlisted in the US Navy August 22, 1951, in Jacksonville, FL. During his active tour he was stationed at NTC, San Diego, CA; REC STA, Pearl Harbor; and on the USS Maddox (DD731). Robert served his country as a Cook's Apprentice. Robert continued his active service until August 19, 1955, when he entered the US Naval Reserves and was stationed in Jacksonville, FL until August 21, 1959. Robert served in the Korean War and his honorable service to his country accorded him the National Defense Service, Good Conduct, and China Service Medals.

Robert was united in marriage to Frances Shaputis on August 17, 1963, in Denver, CO. They made their home in Colorado, where Robert was employed as an auto and heavy equipment painter until his retirement in 1996. Frances was employed as a pre-kindergarten teacher for 25 years in Westminster, Colorado.

They moved to Max, ND in October of 1996 and were blessed with twin grandchildren on October 4, 2000.

Robert enjoyed taking care of the wildlife in his own back yard, which involved a huge feeding area for the birds and the squirrels. He was so passionate about the care of these animals that at no time did they go without food being available. At the time of his death he was on his way to Minot to buy some more birdseed because he was running low.

He will be dearly missed by all who shared in his life.
