Obituary

Phyllis Scheveck Johnson, 79, Minot and formerly of Cando died on Saturday, June 26, 2010 in a Minot hospital.

Phyllis was born on November 10, 1930 in Rock Lake, North Dakota to Price and Margaret (Johnston) Gaast. She was reared and educated in Cando, graduated from Cando High School in 1949 and attended Minot Teachers College.

Phyllis married Leo Scheveck on June 24, 1954 in Cando, ND. They made their home at various places throughout the US and Canada before settling in Minot in 1970. She was employed by the Minot Public Schools as a library clerk from 1973 until 1996. Leo died on April 18, 1983. Phyllis married Ronald Johnson on May 27, 1989 in Surrey, ND. They had continued to make their home in Minot. Following her retirement, Phyllis worked one summer in Yellowstone Park, three summers in Custer State Park, three summers at Mount Rushmore and one summer at the Rapid City KOA campground as a gift shop clerk.

Phyllis was a longtime member of Vincent United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a life member of the Minot PTA, Board of Managers City PTA and established the Helping Hand Program of the PTA in 1973. She co-founded with Sister Elizabeth in 1984 the grief support group at St. Joseph's Hospital "From Grief to Hope" . She was a member of the VFW and American Legion auxiliaries, United Way, American Heart Association, Eagles Aerie, Moose Lodge, Community Concert Association and was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. She did volunteer work for Easter Seals, American heart Association and American Cancer Society. She was a member of Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women and assisted in the research for the book "Plum Valley Women" . She enjoyed the Mouse River Players, held several offices in the Third District Democratic Party and sold tickets for the Minot Public School Activity Association and ND State Fair for over 25 years. She especially enjoyed traveling, reading, collecting crystal figurines and other items. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and had made four trips to Europe, two trips to Hawaii and served as a chaperone for high school students who went to Washington D.C. with the "Close Up Program" of the Law and Justice Class.

Phyllis' loving family includes her husband of 21 years: Ronald Johnson; children: Sherea (Steve) Orrill of Cando, Grant "Kelly" Scheveck of Bismarck, Tamara (Gary) Kelly of Browns Mills, NJ, David (Patti) Scheveck of Billings, MT and Thomas (Carol) Scheveck of Rapid City, SD; stepchildren: Randy Johnson of Minot, Ronda (Greg) Enger of Showlow, AZ and Rick (Debbie) Johnson of Rapid City, SD; sixteen grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; brother: Franklin (Donna) Gaast of Camas, WA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, sister: Jeannine Drentlaw and brother: Armour Gaast.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church - Minot.
Interment
will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Visitation:
Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.
