Obituary

Peter B."Pete" Metz, 86, Minot, died Saturday, November 27, 2010, in a Minot Nursing Home.

Pete was born November 9, 1924 at Minot, North Dakota the son of Claude and Effie (Klungness) Metz. He was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1943 and served in the European Theatre of World War II, until receiving his honorable discharge in April of 1946.

Pete was united in marriage to Phyllis Roll on May 27, 1949 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot.He was recalled to active duty into the Korean Conflict in 1950 and served his country again until 1952.He graduated from the North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) with a degree in Civil Engineering on December 19, 1953. He had continued his education at the University of Oregon at Eugene.

Pete began his career as an engineer with the City of Minot. He later was named City Engineer and worked in that capacity until 1965, when the family moved to Aberdeen, SD and later to Minnesota for a short time. They returned to Minot in 1969, where he resumed working for the City of Minot as the Assistant City Engineer. He retired from the City in 1985, and worked a short time for Materials Testing Services as a Consultant.

Pete was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He was also a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #753, Minot, and a former member of the Minot Elks Lodge #1089. He had served as past president of the Bel Air PTA and was a lifetime member of the ND Congress of Parents and Teachers Association. He had also served as a Cub Scout Leader.

His loving family includes: wife of sixty-one years, Phyllis; children, Paul (Ellen) Metz, Minot, Kathy Aiken, Minot, Carol Metz, Colorado Springs, CO, Mary (Jeff) Schlautman, Fremont, NE, and Joel (Shari) Metz, Minot; grandchildren, Jason and Michael Metz, Allison Aiken Lesmann, Sarah Aiken Slotter, Nathan Ross, Jacob and Caleb Heilman, Emily, and Stephanie and Matthew Metz; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia Metz, Jameson and Gage Lesmann, Alexander, David and Thomas Slotter; sister, Maxine Dinnetz, St Paul, MN; several nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Jim Aiken, brother, Claude "Bill" Metz; and sisters, Mary Placek and Joan Thompson.

Celebration of Life Service: Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.
Visitation: A t the request of the family, there will be no reviewal, however friends may sign a memorial register book on Tuesday from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
