Pearl Ethel Kyes, 95, of Minot, died September 5, 2019 in Minot.
Pearl was born February 8, 1924 at Carpenter Lake, North Dakota, the daughter of Lewis "Duffy" and Gertie (Nerpel) Wicks. She was raised and educated in Hansboro until the family moved to Rolette County where she attended rural schools, then graduated from Rolla High School in 1942. She attended Minot State Teachers College, received a standard teacher's certificate, and taught at rural schools in Rolette County for three years.
Pearl was united in marriage to James Harry Kyes on July 22, 1945 at Rolla. They lived and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad while he served in the United States Air Force. James was honorably discharged in 1963, and they returned to North Dakota, making their home in Minot. Jim died June 1, 2017. After his death, Pearl continued to live in Minot at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living.
Pearl was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church and was involved with United Methodist Women. She served on various church boards and did volunteer work for the Church. She delivered for the Meals On Wheels program for 40 years. Pearl was an accomplished cook and seamstress and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidering, crafts, gardening, Japanese flower arranging, and going on camping, fishing, and hunting trips. She loved and attended many symphonies and plays.
She is survived by her children, James (Susan) H Kyes, Jr of Duluth, MN; Sally (Gary) Conner, Kalispell, MT; grandson: James Lewis (Kerri Persons) Kyes of Duluth; three great grandchildren: James Alan Kyes, Julia Elizabeth Kyes, and Keegan Persons; brother Perry Wicks, Stevensville, MT; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; husband James of 71 years; sisters Ella Timlick, Orpha Keil, Lila Mathis, infant sister; brothers Harold, Jerry, and Larry Wicks.
Funeral service: Monday, September 16 at 10:00 am at Faith United Methodist Church, 5900 US 83 North Minot, ND 58703
Interment: 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2019 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, 1825 46th St, Mandan, ND 58554
Visitation: Sunday, September 15 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, 304 South Main Street, Minot, ND 58701.
Memorials: In lieu of plants or flowers the family prefers memorials be designated to Faith
United Methodist Church or an organization of the donor's choice.
