Patricia "Pat" Mattern, 71, Minot, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, in a Minot hospital.

Patricia was born March 17, 1938, near Deering, ND, the daughter of Arville and Erma (Smith) Kitzman. She was raised in Saline Township of McHenry County, graduating from Deering High School in 1956.

Pat was united in marriage to Clayton Mattern on January 9, 1956, in Minot, ND. They moved into Minot later that year, where she gained employment at Ellison's Department Store and the 52 Club in Minot. They moved to Fargo in 1967 and later to Lakota in 1971. Pat was employed with Don's Recreation for eleven years, until they returned to Minot in 1982, following a short stay in Beulah, ND. She began work as a secretary for Bud's Moving and Storage and later in the same capacity for Action Moving and Storage until her retirement in the early 1990's. Clayton passed away on January 7, 1990. Following retirement, Pat volunteered for the Grandparent Foster Program at Washington Elementary School, where she read to the students and helped them with their school work. The children lovingly called her "Grandma Pat."

She was a member of the Lakota Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary of Lakota. Pat enjoyed a few hobbies that include reading, bowling, fishing, crocheting, crossword puzzles and playing cards with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who shared in her life.

Surviving family includes: Children, Myron (Gail) Mattern, Wheatland, WY, Jane (John) Martin, Surrey, ND and Dennis (Mary) Mattern, Lakota, ND; Grandchildren, Trista Mattern, Cheyenne, WY, Janae and Kara Mattern, both of Rock Springs, WY, Ashley Martin, Surrey, ND, Amy (Eric) Justice, Minot Air Force Base, ND; Great-Grandchildren, Jason Schofield and Payten Hall; Mother, Erma Kitzman, Minot, ND; Siblings, Leslie (Anna) Kitzman, Deering, ND, Deborah (Jack) Long, Bismarck, ND, Joan (Dale) Brabandt, Underwood, ND, Richard (Colleen) Kitzman, Minot and Jay (Maxine) Kitzman, Beulah, ND and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pat was preceded in death by her father, husband and grandson, Steven Mattern.

Funeral service: Monday, February 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, ND.
Family Service: Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: Little Deep Cemetery, rural Upham, ND in the Spring.
Visitation: Sunday, February 21, 2010, from noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: Memorials are preferred to Relay For Life.
