Opal Burt was born Oct. 28, 1921 in Devils Lake to Mentor and Lillian Rognlie. She lived in Minnewaukan where she graduated from high school and attended college at Valley City for 2 years. She then went to Spokane, Washington where she met and married her husband, Clifford Burt. They moved to California where she worked for the City of Glendale and where they raised their two sons, Calvin and Dwain. She loved music and played cello with the Glendale Community Orchestra. After her husband's death in 1968, she returned to Valley City State College where she received her BA degree in Education. She taught Special Ed. in Plentywood, Mt. for 4 years and by the Minot Public Schools until her retirement in 1990. She poured her heart into her teaching and dearly loved her students. The year she retired, she and her sister, Eulale Keesler, opened the Bed and Breakfast in Minnewaukan where she entertained many guests and relatives in her retirement years. She was always there to lend a helping hand in times of need. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.
Survivors include - Sons: Calvin (Joanie) Burt, Dwain Burt, Grandchildren: Jeff (Vanessa) Burt, Katie (Craig) Driver, Elizabeth Burt, Great Granddaughter: Samantha Burt, Lauren Driver, Sisters: Twila Marshall, Eulale (Ray) Keesler, Nephews: David Marshall, Matt Keesler, Niece: Kathy (John) Spurr, Cousins: Hillis (Jean) Hugelen, Audrey Hugelen, Wes (Bette) Rae, Margaret (Harry) Anderson, Clarice (Leon) Ross.
Preceding in her death were her parents, Mentor and Lillian Rognlie, her brother, Milton Rognlie and her husband, Clifford Burt.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home with burial at the Stony Lake Cemetery near Minnewaukan. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Stony Lake Cemetery Fund, Minnewaukan Library, Minnewaukan Museum or to an organization of the donor's choice.
