Odin C. Hanson , 93, Minot, died Wednesday, September 5, 2012 in a Minot Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Odin was born May 13, 1919 in Pelican Rapids, MN the son of Fridthjof and Calma (Kind) Hanson. He was raised and educated in Pelican Rapids. Growing up in Pelican Rapids he got his first job at the local grocery store because he could speak Norwegian. He entered into active duty service with the U.S. Army 135th. Regiment 34th Infantry Red Bull Division. He honorably served his country in North Africa and Italy and was awarded 2 Bronze Stars & combat infantry badge.
Odin returned to Minnesota in 1945 and was united in marriage to Delores Schulz on June 17, 1946 at Moorhead. They moved to Minot in 1948, where he was employed with the Nabisco Company as a salesman for more than 34 years, traveling the states of North Dakota and Montana.
Odin was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Minot American Legion, Last Man's WWII Club of Minot, and lifetime member of the Pelican Rapids VFW. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apple of his eye, as he enjoyed spending time with them along with attending many of their activities. He loved family vacations and gatherings.
Odin's loving family includes, wife of sixty-six years, Delores; children, Kyle (Celeste) Hanson, Minot, Signe (Jim) Schmelzer, Rochester, MN, Todd Hanson, Largo, FL, Julie (Harry) Thrailkill, Minot; grandchildren, Danny (Tasha) Hanson, Adam & Maija Schmelzer, Jacob, Liam & Matthew Thrailkill; Ten great grandchildren; brother in law: Warren Jensen, Canfield OH; grandson-in-law, Todd Behm, Minot; many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Odin was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Chandie Hanson-Behm and sister, Mae Jensen & mother in-law Margaret Schulz.
Funeral service:
Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.
Graveside service
: Monday, Septmeber 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN.
Visitation
: Friday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Christ Lutheran Church, The Wounded Warriors Fund or an organization of the donor's choice.
