Obituary

Norman A. Nevland, Jr., 74, Minot, died Monday, August 6, 2018 in a Minot Nursing Home.

Norman was born November 29, 1943 at Valley City, North Dakota the son of Norman Sr. and June (Worthington) Nevland. He was raised in Hannaford, ND and later moved to Fargo, where he attended Fargo South High School. He enlisted and entered into active duty service with the U.S. Navy on November 30, 1960, serving during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in a home port of San Diego on the USS Tulare, an attack cargo ship. His first mission was escorting Russian submarines out of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Norman was then transferred to the USS Oriskany, an aircraft carrier that he spent the remainder of his honorable service until his discharge on November 27, 1964. Following his military service, he returned to North Dakota and was employed with the Great Northern Railroad in Minot.

Norman was united in marriage to Marion J. Lysne on January 9, 1966 in Velva. Their union was blessed with three children, Maren, Dawn and Chad. They called Minot home. Norman left the railroad in 1969 to begin his career with the Minot Police department, where he started as a patrolman. He was later promoted to work as a Detective of investigation in the areas of drug enforcement and arson detection, where he received special training. Having had a heart attack in 1997, he chose to retire in 1998. After retirement he was employed with the Dakota Dental Lab in Minot for several years.

Norman was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Blue Knights Motorcycle Chapter, American Legion, along with the Eagles and Elks Clubs, all of Minot. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran. For several years, he served as a Scout Master along with Wally Heinle for Boy Scout Troop #425. His hobbies and interests include fishing, hunting and motorcycling with friends and family. He glowed at the sight of his grandchildren and valued the time spent with his family. He worked his entire life to provide for his family and will be missed by all who were blessed to share in his life.

Norman's loving family includes: wife of 52 years, Marion; children, Maren (Scott) Weishaar, St. Paul, MN, Dawn Hinckley, Minot and Chad (Heather) Nevland, Plum City, WI; 9 grandchildren, Jaime and Casey Weishaar, Kayla and Samantha Hinckley, Paige, Payton, Isabel, Brailey and Kaelyn Nevland; 5 great-grandchildren, Ayden, Ava, Amelia, Asher & Ariel; uncle, Tom Nevland, Miles City, MT; siblings, Gary (Vicki) Jacobs, McComb, MS, Lanny (Diane) Butler, Crozet, VA, Kim (Brian) Dunne, Manhatten Beach, CA; his brothers and sisters in law, Lyle Lunde, Bottineau, Richard and Thelma Lysne, Velva, Audrey Needham, Fargo, Karen Krebsbach, Minot; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Craig Feland, Jeffrey Butler, Lane Nevland along with his brothers and sisters in law, Howard & Claribel Lysne, Orvin and Irene Lysne, Merle Lunde, Don Needham and Paul Krebsbach.

Celebration of Life service : Monday, August 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: At the request of family there will not be a viewing, however friends may sign the memorial register book on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
