Norman Bruno Herdt, 83, Minot and formerly of Gasman Township left this world on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a short battle with cancer.
Norman was born on June 29, 1929 on the family farm in Gasman Township of Ward County north of Max, ND to Leo and Rebecca (Roth) Herdt. He attended Harmony School and graduated from Max High School. As a young adult he assisted his father and brother with the operation of the family farm. Norman married Joyce Galusha on October 24, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm where he continued to assist his family and he was employed as a heavy equipment operator during the construction of the Garrison Dam as well as at Hovde Salvage and Allied Contractors. The family resided in Jamestown in 1969 where he was employed by Haybusters. They returned to Minot in 1970 where Norman was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Schriock Construction and Aggregate Construction. He retired in 1994.
Norman was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church as well as the Eagles Aerie, Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge where he served as a trustee. He enjoyed attending threshing shows especially in Rollag, MN, and traveling to many casinos. He also enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Norman is survived by his loving wife of almost 58 years Joyce; children: Keith Herdt of Velva and Karen (Warren) Dockter of Minot; stepdaughter: CeeCee (Doug) Thompson of Minot; grandchildren: Randi (Luke) Monley of Minot and Maison Herdt of Velva; stepgrandchildren: Brooks (Jen) Pederson of Fargo, Lindee Thompson of Minneapolis, Alish (Zach) Charley of Minot, Shane (Sandra) Dockter of Thornton CO, and Lonnie (Sue) Dockter of Mahnomen MN; great grandchildren: Holden Monley and step great grandchildren: Gabe and Reagan Pederson and Jacob and Mirah Charley, and many nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Arnold and step granddaughter: Joni Dockter.
Celebration of the Life of Norman Herdt: Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church Minot.
Interment arrangements are pending.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Trinity Hospice or Our Savior Lutheran Church.
