Neil Shelkey, 60, Minot, died Friday, November 26, 2021, in his home.
Neil William was born to Dale and Rose (Schelin) Shelkey on March 1, 1961, in Minot, ND. Neil grew up in Berthold, ND with his siblings and proudly held the title of #8 out of 10 kids in his family. He took his role in the family quite seriously as he quickly earned the nickname "Professor" for his inquisitive nature which exceeded his siblings' tolerance for questions.
After completing 11 years of education, Neil decided to ride off into the next chapter of his life…being a cowboy in Denbigh, ND. This was Neil's most revered profession and it brought him much joy. Upon realizing that being a cowboy was more than just fun, it was also wildly expensive, he decided it was time to retire the cowboy lifestyle. He began his next journey as a rancher in Newburg, ND before finally settling in Minot.
Neil later attended North Dakota State College of Science and earned an Associates of Diesel Technology Degree.
After his years as a cowboy, rancher, and professor he took on the most important job of all, being a Dad. Being a dad to Katie was his pride and joy. His dad title was quickly christened by his use and love of dad jokes. He often loved to refer to Katie as his "favorite" child, with the silver lining that she was his only living child.
Neil continued to work diligently in different professions to provide for his family. After gathering knowledge of contracting, plumbing, and carpentry, he decided to open his own business. Neil owned and operated Daily Mobile Home Services with pride. Neil retired his business in 2020 due to health issues. Neil loved spending the remainder of his days reminiscing with family and friends.
Neil is survived by his daughter Katie Shelkey, Minot; siblings Dorothy (Richard) Rogers, Sidney, MT, Frank (Nicki) Shelkey, Berthold, ND, Dayle Ann (Gary) Barnett, Minot, ND, Layne (Charlotte) Shelkey, Minot, Patti (Kevin) Hanson, Ryder, ND, Laurene (Dennis) Ness, Minot, David (Cathy) Shelkey, Berthold, Mary (Dan) Shelkey-Miller, Bismarck, ND, and Andy (Pam) Shelkey, Minot, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Benjamin, infant daughter Jamie, and nephews Loren Rogers and Rory Shelkey.
