Obituary

Myrtle Moseng Schmidt, 96, 24 14th Ave. S.W. - Minot and former owner and operator of Hillcrest Beauty Shop and Motel, died on Saturday, August 5, 2006, in a Minot hospital.

Myrtle was born on March 7, 1910, in Greely Township of Ward County near Benedict, North Dakota, to Carl and Martha (Gunderson) Moseng. She was raised on the family homestead and attended Darrow school. As a young adult she moved to Minot, ND and began working at Trinity Hospital and attended Reishus-Holt Beauty College where she received special training in cosmetology. Myrtle married William Schmidt on April 23, 1931 in Minot. They made their home in Minot where she and her husband owned and operated Schmidt Barber and Beauty Shop in downtown Minot for twenty years. During World War II she and Bill volunteered in the U.S. Ground Observer Corps, for the Army Air Forces, watching for enemy aircraft from the roof of Washington Elementary School in Minot. They moved to Lodi, CA, and lived there for two years before returning to Minot in 1954 where they established the Hillcrest Business and Apartment Complex on South Broadway which included Hillcrest Beauty and Barber Shop as well as Hillcrest Motel. They retired and sold the business complex in 1967. Bill died on November 12, 1986. After retirement Myrtle volunteered at John Moses Air Force and Trinity Hospitals and for the Red Cross.

Myrtle was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church - Minot and American Red Cross. Her hobbies and special interests included oil painting and other artistic endeavors as well as traveling, hunting, fishing and quilting.

Survivors include: Stepdaughter: Adabelle Tavenner of Dalles, TX; Step Grandsons: George Jr. and Tad Tavenner; Sister: Charlotte Borud of Minot; Brother: Harold Moseng of Benedict and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Clara Beatrice Moseng, Minnie Woster and Gina Johnson and brothers: Clarence, Art and Morris Moseng.

Funeral Service: Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. in Faith United Methodist Church - Minot.
Interment
will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation:
Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Memorials
are preferred to Faith United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
