Myrtle Mestad Hustad, 98, Jamestown, ND, former longtime Minot resident, passed into the Lord's arms surrounded by her family on Monday, April 16th at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown, North Dakota.
Myrtle was born March 15, 1920 in Renville County, near Mohall, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Helge and Rachel (Johnson) Mestad. She was raised and educated in Mohall and during her younger years moved with her family to Minot in 1935. She graduated from Minot High School in 1938 and attended Trinity School of Nursing in Minot, graduating with a degree in nursing in 1941.
Myrtle was employed at the Veteran's Hospital in Hot Springs, SD for a few years, prior to her marriage to F. Boyd Hustad on February 2, 1943 in Minot. They lived in California for a short time while he was stationed overseas during World War II.
Myrtle and Boyd returned to Minot in 1950, where she began employment with the Veterans Hospital as head nurse in the surgical ward. She later became the charge nurse in the OB Ward at the John Moses Air Force Hospital. She retired in 1973 and continued to work as a relief nurse in Minot Clinics from 1973-1983. Boyd passed away on February 5, 1994. She gave much of her retirement to volunteering and caring for others. She continued to live in Minot, until moving to Jamestown in 2011 to be nearer her daughter and family.
Myrtle was an active member at First Lutheran Church, Minot, where she served with the quilter's group and Circle groups, also serving as past president of the Ladies Aide. She was also an active member of the Sons of Norway Club. She and her husband were involved with the origination of the Trail Rider's Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, cooking, baking, making lefse and gardening.
She had great admiration and love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were so blessed to have her guidance and faith in their lives.
Her loving family includes, children, Kathleen Wynne, Jamestown & Rebecca (Peter) Mason, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Erin, Elizabeth "Libby" (Brian), Stuart and his wife, Lauren, Timothy, Luke and his wife, Amy; great grandchildren, Noah, Caleb, Lucas, Sarah, Peyton, Zane, Maggie, Molly Myrtle, Jack & Althea.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 51 years, Boyd; son-in-law, Lloyd M. Wynne; brother, Harold and sisters, Thelma and Elizabeth "Betty" Mestad.
Celebration of Life service : Friday, April 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Chapel of First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation
: Thursday, April 19th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to JRMC Hospice, The Ave Maria Village Nursing Care Center in Jamestown or First Lutheran Church in Minot.
