Mildred Sophie Newman, 100, longtime Newman Township resident, died Sunday, March 29, 2020 in a Velva Nursing Care Center.

Mildred was born October 5, 1919 in Burlington, North Dakota the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Houston) Goebel. She was raised on the family farm and educated at country schools near Burlington. After completing her education, she assisted with the operation of the family farmstead.

Mildred was united in marriage to Gerald Newman on October 30, 1941 at Foxholm. They lived in Minot for several years and Montana for 3 years, prior to making their home on a farm in Newman Township of Ward County in 1958, where they farmed and raised their four children. They retired from farming in 1996 and moved to Minot that same year. Gerald died February 9, 2000.

Mildred was a charter member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. She did volunteer work with the Church Food Pantry, assisted with Masses held at Trinity Homes, was active with St Ann's Society and was also a member of the Women of the Moose in Minot. She enjoyed reading, doing crafts, crocheting, gardening, quilting, playing a winning hand of cards, working with puzzles, playing bingo, along with spending time with her family.   God bless her memory.

Mildred's loving family includes :  Gary (Carol) Newman, Minot, ND, Gayle (Larry) Grabill, Lander, WY, Linda Howe, Velva, ND and Diane (Robert) Hensel, Park Rapids, MN; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; & 10 great-great grandchildren; sister, Florence Groshans,  Glendale, AZ, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 59 years, Gerald; son in law, Donald Howe; brothers, Martin and his wife, Alice; Robert and his wife, Evelyn and Kenneth Goebel; sisters, Louise Satran and Margaret Cole and her husband, Jack; and brother in law, Don Groshans.

Private Family Graveside service : (Due to the COVID 19 restriction) will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.   ** A livestream of the service will be broadcast by accessing https://www.mtmsales.net/live

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Memorials : preferred to Souris Valley Care Center or Valley View Manor, Velva.

Limited Visitation: Due to restrictions, please contact the family if you plan to attend for a time available on Friday, April 17, 2020 in Thomas Family Funeral Home.
