Obituary

Mildred Hostbjor, 96, Bowbells died on Friday, December 20, 2019 in a Kenmare hospital.

Mildred Lillian was born on April 13, 1923 in Bowbells, ND to Joseph and Margaret (Petersen) Walleen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical United Brethren Church and her early years were spent tending her mother's garden, her father's fruit trees and babysitting. She was raised and educated in Bowbells and Flaxton, graduated with honors from Bowbells High School in 1940 and attended Minot State Teachers College. While in high school, she was employed as a telephone operator for Maud Ballard. Following her education, she returned to Bowbells where she was employed as the Deputy Register of Deeds under Simon Berget for three years.

Mildred married Zane Hostbjor of Flaxton, ND on July 13, 1943 in Plentywood, MT. They made their home in Minot, Flaxton, Powers Lake and Noonan. While residing in Noonan she was Superintendant of the Methodist Church Sunday School and co-leader of a Cub Scout program. The family moved to Whittier, CA, in 1956 where she was employed at the House of Humor Variety Store prior to serving as the manager of a Downy, CA waste disposal company until her retirement in 1989. Zane and Milly divorced in 1970 and she married Jack Hendricks in 1973. This union gave her two stepdaughters and four step grandchildren. Mildred moved to Bowbells in 2002 and most recently had been a resident of the Kenmare Hospital Long Term Care Facility.

Milly was a member of the Bowbells Methodist Church and a former member of the Mount Olive Presbyterian Church in Whittier. She especially appreciated flowers, movies, plays, books and traveled to all but five states the United States as well as Canada, Sweden and Denmark. Christmas was always a special time for Milly and she especially enjoyed decorating inside and outside. Seizing every opportunity to help with elderly, youth and church she was always a willing volunteer. She was known to many as Grandma Milly.

Mildred is survived by her sons: Barry Hostbjor of del Rio TX, Gregory (Huguette) Hostbjor of Lignite, Kevin (Terri) Hostbjor of Langley WA and Shane (Debra) Hostbjor of Bend OR; five grandchildren: Scott, Christy, Jarad, Kirsten, and Breanna; great grandchildren: Grace, Dylan, Megan, Ivy, Theo and Hayden; sister: Margaret Hass of Minot and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
