Obituary

Maxine R. Carlson, 89, Minot, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 in a Minot Hospital.

Maxine was born August 25, 1921 at Columbus, North Dakota, the daughter of Arthur and Gina (Koppelsloen) Kielhack. Following the death of her birth mother, she was adopted as an infant by Hugo and Clara Domrese. She was reared and educated at Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1938. She attended Minot State Teachers College from 1938-1941, where she was a member of the Beta Theta Sorority. At Minot State, she met Duane Carlson and on July 4, 1942 they were married at Plentywood, Montana.

They made their home in Minot, where Duane taught and coached football, track, wrestling and basketball for Minot High School for many years until he became the Athletic Director of Minot Public Schools. Throughout the years, Maxine was active raising their two sons, Bruce and Kurt, in addition to working in the bookkeeping department at Union National Bank (later First Bank). She later worked at Dakota Drug in Minot from 1961 until retiring in 1983. Duane died on October 19, 2000.

Maxine was a charter member of the Minot State University Board of Regents and received the MSU "Golden Award" in 1991. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Minot. As members of the Minot Country Club, she and Duane enjoyed playing golf. She was also active with several local bridge groups. Maxine was an avid and extremely knowledgeable sports fan and especially loyal to Minot High School athletics. Her interest in sports, especially football, continued for the rest of her life. She never missed any of her grandchildren's sporting or musical activities. She also had a special interest in classical music and enjoyed many of the local theatre events. She had traveled to New York City to see shows on Broadway. Maxine will always be remembered for her quick wit and love of learning.

Her loving family includes : sons: Bruce (Jean) Carlson of Minneapolis, MN, Kurt Carlson, Minot; daughter-in-law: Pamela Carlson, Fargo; grandchildren: Shawn (Karena) Carlson of Fargo, Sara (Dustin) Deutsch, Minot, Angela (Edward) Mills, Danny Carlson and Alecia Gooch, all of Washington, DC; great-grandchildren: Kain Carlson, Jack Carlson, Jill Carlson, Noah Deutsch and Baby Boy Mills, due in April of 2011; sisters-in-law: Marlene Kielhack, Minot , and Doris Carlson, Minneapolis.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane; brother, Floyd Kielhack and sister, Florine Charboneau.

Funeral service : Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in First Presbyterian Church, Minot;
Interment : Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot;
Visitation: Friday from 2:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Duane Carlson Athletic Fund in care of, Minot Public School Foundation or the First Presbyterian Church, Minot.
