Obituary

Mavis Carol Starr was born in Minot, North Dakota on May 5, 1952 to Perry Ross and Rosalie White Body. Her maternal grandparents were Pete and Ester Starr. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Ross and Maggie Winans Ross.

She attended both Wahpeton Indian School and Flandreau Indian School where she was a member of the Congregational Church Choir and the Indian club.

She enjoyed all sports including volleyball and basketball, and loved music of all kinds. She loved to sing and even learned to play the drums.

After school she lived in Minot, North Dakota until she met and married Gordon Mariner, together they had four children: Michael, Michelle, Gordon III, and Monty Mariner.

The family lived in various towns throughout their years together, working and making friends wherever they resided.

In the late 70's they moved to New Town where they formed their own business "Gordy Mariner and Sons Water Well Drilling Service" where she took care of the bookkeeping and financial arrangements. In the early 80's, they managed the Four Bears Gas Station where she also took care of all the bookkeeping. She even went to school to become a welder and was part of the crew that built the bleachers for the New Town Rodeo Grounds. She was also an armed security guard for an Army Ammunition Plant while living in Hawthorne, Nevada.

Chi Chi, as everyone knew her had a variety of jobs throughout her life but most of all she loved being a homemaker. She was always decorating her home and loved her plants. She also loved to cook! All her friends and family knew what a great baker she was and always looked forward to a new batch of bread. She'd bag some buns and send then out to her regulars and even has requests from others to bake bread for them.

She came from a very musical family, she also enjoyed listening as well as jamming with her cousins Ronny and Billy Starr and every now and then, she'd make it to her son's gigs, who she taught his first three chords on the guitar to.

Chi Chi was loved by all her friends and they visited her often at her last place of residence at Dragswolf Village. During her last few years she had a very special friend whom she loved, which she called him "One" and he was always there for her.

Mavis will be missed by many.
