Obituary

Mary Saltsman, 92, Bismarck and formerly of Minot, died on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck.

Mary was born on August 8, 1922 in Lativi, Ukraine to Dmytro and Antonia (Luchyshen) Prisizney. Mary and her mother immigrated to Canada in 1929 and they settled in Rostern, Saskatchewan prior to moving to Wierdale, SK. Mary enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served during World War II at Pats Bay, British Columbia.

Following her honorable discharge in 1946 she returned to Saskatchewan and was employed at a fishing resort on Waskesiu Lake in Prince Albert National Park. While working there she met George Saltsman, who became her husband on October 2, 1948. George and Mary settled and lived in Minot, except for four years (1960-1964) when they resided in Rugby. George brought Mary to the United States as a "war bride," who later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Mary was fulltime wife, mother and homemaker. She worked for the North Dakota Department of Transportation Drivers License Division for eight years, and retired in 1987. After George's retirement as an Engineer for the railroad and as a real estate agent, they traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada and later became snowbirds in Tucson, AZ. George died on November 3, 2000.

Mary was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a life member of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a former member of the All Saints Episcopal Church. She and George were very active in the Democratic NPL Party and entertained many political figures over the years.
