Mary Ann Bakken, 78, Minot, formerly of Voltaire, died Sunday, September 19, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family and hospice.

Mary Ann was born July 5, 1943 at Velva, North Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Gena (Madsen) Sheelar. She was raised on the family farm near Strawberry Lake and educated at country schools in Otis Township and later at Butte High School. She assisted her family with the operation of the family farm and during her younger years was employed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Minot in the housekeeping department.

Mary Ann was united in marriage to Carroll Bakken on April 4, 1982. They lived on a farm near Voltaire and saw many growing seasons and shared a beautiful life together. She was a former member of First Lutheran Church in Ruso and Stenkjaer Lutheran in Simcoe until they closed. She was currently attending Oak Valley Lutheran in Velva.

Mary Ann served on the joint cemetery board for Westgaard and Stenkjaer Cemeteries.  She enjoyed hobbies of needlework, photography, feeding and watching her birds, collecting family history and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Her loving family includes, brother, Marvin Sheelar, McClusky, ND; sisters, Ella (Eugene) Schon and Maxine (Terry) Berg, both of Turtle Lake, ND; nieces and nephews to include, Steve (Shelly) Schon, Bismarck, Chad (Lark) Schon, Bismarck, Sarah (Jarvis) Keney, Bismarck, Delilia (Rich) Wolf, Ruso; special cousin, Cheryl Lovro, Norwich, ND.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 37 years, Carroll; an infant sister, Ellen and sister-in-law, Linda Sheelar.

Interment: Westgaard Cemetery, rural Voltaire, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service on Monday in the Church.
