MarVonne Angeline Olson , 86, Mandan, and formerly of Minot, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 peacefully at a Bismarck hospital.
MarVonne was born in Minot, ND on October 5, 1928 to Andrew and Agnes (Abrahamsen) Strand. She attended Minot High School and made many long-lasting friendships with her classmates, graduating in 1946. She continued her education at Minot State Teachers College, graduating in 1948 with a Standard Teaching Certificate. Later, MarVonne obtained a Bachelor's degree in Education. While attending Minot State Teachers College, she enjoyed being a member of the Beta Theta Sorority.
MarVonne taught school in Devils Lake for two years before returning to Minot where she spent 28 years teaching at Minot Public Schools. She was a member of the National Education Association, the North Dakota Education Association, the Parent Teachers Association, and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
On December 23, 1950 MarVonne was united in marriage to Nick Olson at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. They were married 56 years and had two children, Marci and Scott. Nick passed away in 2007. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Bethany Lutheran Church where she had been a member of the Mary Circle.
In addition to raising her two children, MarVonne was an active member of the Minot Country Club where she had served as President of the Women\'s Golf Association. She was an avid golfer and was fortunate to make two holes-in-one during her golfing days. MarVonne enjoyed playing bridge and she was a member of the American Bridge League. She played regularly with her group of friends in the Duplicate Bridge Club. MarVonne loved to dance and she and her husband danced frequently at the Elks Lodge when they were members. She enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren's activities, reading, and taking long walks. MarVonne cherished her family and her time spent with them.
After retiring in 1989, she and her husband bought a home in Sun City West, AZ and spent many winters there. They enjoyed golfing, spending time with friends, and renewing friendships. They regularly got together with their 1946 Minot High School classmates. MarVonne lived in Minot until 2013, when she moved to a Mandan nursing home.
MarVonne's loving family includes: daughter, Marci Olson, Bismarck; son, Scott (Cheryl) Olson, Bismarck; granddaughters, Amy Olson, Bismarck and Kari Olson, Minot; sisters Ardeth Strand, Minot; Alma Bondly, Ellenton, Florida; Mildred (John) Lochthowe, Minot; Norma Parge, Missoula, Montana; Verna Manfolk, Pine City, Minnesota; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick; parents, Andrew and Agnes; and brothers Bernard and infant,Theodore.
Celebration of Life Service
: Friday, June 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot
Visitation:
There will be no reviewal, however family and friends are invited to sign a memorial register book on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Bethany Lutheran Church Foundation or Minot Public Schools Foundation, both of Minot.
