Reverend Marvin Holje, 86, Minot, formerly of Maddock and Harvey died Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in a Minot Nursing Home.
Marvin was born June 11, 1929 at Maddock, North Dakota the son of Leonard and Mabel (Bondeli) Holje. He was educated at Flora, ND and the Benson County Agricultural & Training School. He furthered his education at UND and NDSU graduating with a degree in Agricultural studies. He then attended and graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul Minnesota.
Marvin honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. He was united in marriage to Carol Gray on July 30, 1954 at Fargo. Marvin was ordained as a Pastor in 1958. He and his family made their home at various communities in North Dakota where he served as pastor for over 36 years in Woodworth, Napoleon, Harvey and Underwood. Marvin and Carol retired from their ministry in 1994 and moved to Minot that same year.
While serving in those communities, Marvin was a member of the Napoleon Lions Club and Harvey Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Western ND Synod Council. After retiring, he was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its "Breakfast with the Boys group". Marvin enjoyed taking formal writing workshops along with his love for photography and travel.
His loving family includes : wife of 61 years, Carol; children, Mary (Bob) Goggins, Lincoln, NE, Ruth Holje (Gary) Manuele of Harker Heights, TX and Sarah (Pastor Tim) Johnson, Velva; grandchildren, Aaron Goggins, Nathan Johnson and Isaak Johnson; step-grandchildren, Michael Creech, Shanna (Aaron) Frisch, Mandy (Charles) Hass, Jessica Manuele and Lauren Manuele; 8 step-great-grandchildren; brother, David (Jane) Holje, Maddock, ND; brother-in-law, Curtis Hvinden, Maddock; sister-in-law, Marilyn Champoux, Kalispel, MT; several nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lorraine Holje Hvinden.
Funeral service:
Monday, August 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
North Viking Lutheran Cemetery, rural Maddock.
Visitation:
Sunday, August 16th from Noon-5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials are preferred to Metigoshe Ministries or Bethany Lutheran Church Foundation.
