Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. November 19, 2024 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Minot, with military honors accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Visitation: November 19th one hour prior to the service in the church.

Marvin Ira "Marv" Avery , 92, longtime Minot resident, died Friday, September 6, 2024 in a Minot Hospital.

Marv was born December 14, 1931 in Minot, North Dakota, the son of Earl and Helen (Stoddard) Avery. He was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1949.

Marv was employed at the Minot Post Office prior to entering into active duty service with the U.S. Marine Corps on February 2, 1951. Marv was a recipient of a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his courageous service to his country during the Korean Conflict. He served honorably until February 1, 1954.  Marv always said "once a Marine, always a Marine".

Marv was united in marriage to Arlene Thingvold on May 20, 1953 in Helena, MT. They made their home in Minot, where Marv was employed with Occident Elevator in Minot and later with the Great Northern Railroad (later Burlington Northern) from 1955 until 1992, retiring after 37 years with the company. Marv had also worked part-time at Thomas Family Funeral Home as a funeral assistant.

Marv was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Minot, the local DAV Chapter, Minot American Legion Post #26, Moose Lodge and a life member of the Roughrider Rodeo. He enjoyed hunting, team roping, reading, gardening and curling.

Marv's loving family includes: his wife of 71 years, Arlene; daughter, Michelle (David) Robinson, Nevis, MN; grandchildren, Emily (Wade) Christensen, Brian (Laurel) Robinson, Jordan Avery and Katie Avery; great grandchildren Cay and Collin Christensen and sister, Mavis Williamson, Minot.

Marv was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Monte Avery and brother-in-law Gary Williamson

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. November 19, 2024 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Minot, with military honors accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Interment: Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
Visitation: November 19th one hour prior to the service in the church.
Memorials are preferred to Roughrider Rodeo (11600 135th Ave SE Sawyer, ND 58781).
