Marty Gross, 82, Minot, died Monday, May 9, 2016, in a Minot hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Marty was born September 5, 1933, in North Bergen, NJ to John and Margaret (Folk) Gross. He was raised and educated in New Jersey, and following the death of his father he enlisted in the US Navy in 1949. During training he was transferred to the United States Air Force.
Marty married Lucy Scaglione on August 28, 1955 in Tampa. They made their home at air force bases in Tampa, Lincoln NE prior to moving to Minot Air Force Base in 1966. They lived at MAFB for eight years before moving to Minot prior to his retirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1976.
Following his retirement, he was employed as a carpenter and by the City of Minot Water Department. He graduated from Minot State University with a degree in Business in 1983. He earned his real estate license and worked at Century 21 Action Realtors. Lucy died on July 18, 1995. Marty retired from real estate later that year after 19 years of service to the community.
Marty married Joan Hennes on August 27, 1999 at Little Flower Catholic Church - Minot. They made their home in Minot.
Marty was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church where he was active as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher. He was especially proud of his involvement with the Scouts which began in the 1970's and culminated with his receipt of the Silver Beaver Award. Marty was a member of the Good Sam RV Club and Moose Lodge where he was often found on the dance floor. He especially enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with family and friends.
Marty's loving family includes his wife of fifteen years Joan; children: Donna (Ron) Amundson of Bismarck, Barbara Hansen and Gloria (Ken) Smith all of Minot, John (Diane) Gross of Arlington WA, Patricia (Rod) Weigel of Williston, Thomas (Patricia) Gross of Fairbanks AK and Joseph (Valerie) Gross of Minot, Steve (Jill) Hennes of St. Paul MN, Mike (Pam) Hennes of Grand Forks and Cathy (Rick) Parish of Cheyenne WY; grandchildren: Andrew, Christopher and Scott Amundson and Kate (Shubh) Sharma; Jake (Angie) Hansen and Alexis (Matt) Rossland; Kenneth (Beth) Smith and Kathryn Smith; Danielle and Tyler Gross and Brittaney (Chris) Johnson; Sarah, Ian and Cullen Weigel; Cary Dube; Jason (Michelle) Zuther and Heather (Jay) Faul; Jay (Nanami) Hennes and Jesse (Abby) Hennes and Kelsey (David) Schreiner; Jennifer, Tom (Allison) and Laura (Adam) Hennes; Kyle Parish and Laine (Lindsey) Parish; great grandchildren: Taylor and Brooklyn Hansen, Lucy, Stella and Baby Rossland, Kenny and Baby Boy Smith, Ellie Mae Johnson, Oliver Weigel, Benjamin Zuther, Baby Schreiner, Katelynn and Addison; brother, Richard (Joyce) Gross, Parrish, FL and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucy, son-in-law, Kirk Hansen and siblings, Vic Gross and John Gross.
Mass of Christian Burial:
2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service:
7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
Visitation:
Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials
are preferred to local organizations involved in scouting or to Little Flower Catholic Church or Faith Methodist Church, both of Minot.
