Obituary

Marian Jane Korterud, 93, longtime Minot resident, died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in a Garrison hospital.

Marian was born on March 26, 1920 in Kenmare, ND to Thomas Ray and Lucinda (Cushman) Assels. She was reared on the family farm near Norma, ND and attended Stafford Township School #1, a one room schoolhouse. In 1933, the family moved to a farm near Donnybrook, ND where Marian attended high school. She graduated from Hartland High School in 1937. Following graduation, she moved to Minot where she was employed as a housekeeper and nanny. She later moved to Stanley where she was employed as a waitress at a local caf. In 1939, she moved to Kalispell, Montana where she was also employed as a housekeeper and nanny until returning to North Dakota in 1940.

Marian was once married to Floyd Peterson. In 1947, she moved to Minot with her two daughters. She was employed at the LaPlaza Caf in the Leland Parker Hotel and Ellison's Department Store as a salesperson in the ladies department.

Marian was united in marriage to Oliver "Tiny" Korterud on December 28, 1950 in Minot. They made their home in Minot where she was employed for thirty years as a receptionist and secretary-bookkeeper for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union office in Minot. Oliver died on April 6, 1986. Marian had continued to reside in Minot until she moved to Garrsion because she was displaced by the flood in June of 2011.

Marian was an active member of First Lutheran Church - Minot where she taught Sunday School for twenty-seven years and 8th Grade Confirmation classes. She served on the Deaconess Board for thirty-five years and on the Altar Guild. She was a member of a ladies circle and a thirty-five year member of First Lutheran Quilters. Marian was a volunteer at Trinity Homes and brought books to the residents and visited with them. She also worked as a volunteer for the C.O.P.E. office in the Minot Labor Temple, which is the political organization for the local unions that distributes information about the candidates, cares for phones on election day, calls and urges people to vote, and provides rides for voters. Most recently, she volunteered for Trinity Hospice and Trinity Auxiliary.

In 1998, Marian enrolled in the Foster Grandparent Program. She was assigned to Roosevelt Elementary School and was there for eleven years, where she was affectionately known as "Grandma K". She loved children and especially enjoyed spending time with them, assisting them with their studies, and giving and receiving hugs.

Marian's loving family includes her daughter, Linda Barnes, of Minot and son Daryl Korterud, of Garrison; granddaughters, Marlee (Doug) Ongaro, Kenwood, CA; Jill Rider, Spokane, WA; Ursula Mason, Gillespie, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Taylor Ongaro, Marissa Florio, Aiyana DeLima-Weishaar and Andrew Mason; sisters, Adeline Gregson, Westfield, MA; LaDonna Dougherty, Stafford, VA; numerous nieces and nephewsas well as a foster son, Dennis (Donna) Anderson and two foster grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Sharon Jones; brother, Tom Assels; a niece and a nephew.

Celebration of the Life of Marian Korterud: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens - Minot.
Visitation: Monday, September 16, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, Minot or to the American Cancer Society.
