Margaret Scouton, 96, lifelong Minot resident and the granddaughter of Minot pioneers, died on Sunday, November 3, 2019 in a Minot nursing home.

Margaret Gail Olson was born on June 18, 1923 in Minot to Oscar and Bessie (Siverson) Olson. Oscar was the son of Mr and Mrs. Olaf A. Olson who arrived in 1882 by covered wagon to the southern reaches of the Mouse River Valley which eventually became the city of Minot. They homesteaded land in the area of what is now the Oak Park and Arrowhead Shopping Center areas of Minot. Oscar was six months old at the time and Margaret was the only granddaughter of Olaf.

Margaret was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1941. She continued her education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. It was at U.N.D. that she met Donald L. Scouton, a native of Inkster ND and they were later married. They made their home in Minot where she was a fulltime wife, mother and homemaker and Donald served in the Army and Army Reserve and was employed by the I.R.S., established and managed Thrifty Gas Company throughout North Dakota and was a land developer. Donald died on June 12, 1969. Margaret had continued to reside in Minot and in Palm Desert CA during the winter months.

Margaret was a member of First Lutheran Church - Minot and its Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She especially enjoyed gardening, reading walking and the warmth of the desert during the winter months.

Margaret is survived by her son: Roger (Sue) Scouton of Redondo Beach CA; grandchildren: Conrad and Gavin Scouton and Vanessa Scouton Yepez and brother-in-law: William Scouton of Arlington VA.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son: Dr. Larry Scouton.

Celebration of the Life of Margaret Scouton: December 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of the Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park - Minot.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to the Minot Vocational Workshop or to Headstart.
