Helen Sand, 89, Minot, ND died Wednesday, October 30, 2019 in a Minot Nursing Home.

Marie Helen Sand was born October 25, 1930 the daughter of Albinus (Elizabeth Steier) Schneider at Karlsruhe, ND. She was raised in Norwich and educated at Granville. She attended one year at Minot Business College. She was united in marriage to Ardell Dyste in 1948 and to this union two sons were born, Bernard and David. Helen was left a widow to Ardell due to a vehicle accident in 1959. Helen then married Carl T. Sand August 10, 1962 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. The couple made their home on the Sand family farm in Afton Township, Ward County, south of Minot. Together they raised their family, which included Helen's two nephews, Larry and Brad Thom, sons of Helen's sister, Theresa Thom, who had died of cancer when the boys were young. The Sand home was always a safe haven for all who needed a home.

Helen worked many years as a cook at the Minot Moose Lodge and cleaned professionally at the Minot Livestock Auction. Hard work and kitchen duties at home or the Moose Lodge seemed to be a joy and passion for Helen, she was always happiest in the kitchen.

Helen was a member of the Women of the Moose, past president of the Afton Township Homemakers and the Minot Eagles Club, and Minot Senior Citizens Center.

Due to failing health, Carl and Helen moved into Minot in 2009. She devoted her time to caring for Carl's needs. Carl preceded Helen in death on September 6, 2011.

Helen is survived by her son David Dyste, of Minot, ND, special nephews, Larry (Tammy) Thom, Brad (Dawn) Thom, all of Minot, ND, daughter-in-law, Susan Dyste, of Tempe, AZ, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl, and son, Bernard Dyste and one sister; Theresa Thom.

Memorial services are set for 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2019 at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday, November 3, 2019 from Noon until 2:00 pm at Thomas Family Funeral Home.
