Obituary

Lyle Gordon Opland, 93, Minot and formerly of the Des Lacs area died on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in a Minot hospital.

Lyle was born on June 18, 1925 on the family farm in Rolling Green Township of Ward County near Des Lacs, ND to Emil and Olga (Larson) Opland. He was reared on the family farm, attended Vang Township School and graduated from Des Lacs High School in 1942. As a young adult he assisted on the family farm.

Lyle married Esther Vangsness on June 10, 1946 at Rose Valley Lutheran Church - rural Des Lacs. They made their home on a farm in the Des Lacs area for many years prior to moving to Minot in 2004. He farmed and ranched and was employed in a variety of positions including adjustor and trainer by the Federal Crop Insurance Agency. Then, he owned and operated the Opland Insurance Agency of Minot and Jamestown, specializing in crop insurance, for the past thirty-seven years.

Lyle was a longtime member of Rose Valley Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and taught Sunday School for many years. He also served on an area school board and was a former member of the Elks Lodge, Eagles Aerie and Moose Lodge. He especially enjoyed pinochle, Sudoku, traveling and pitching horseshoes.

Lyle's loving family includes his wife of 72 years: Esther; children: Craig (Wanda) Opland of Pelican Rapids MN, Gordon (Sharon) Opland of Johnston Iowa, Mark (Jackie) Opland of Des Lacs and Korey Opland of Minneapolis; eleven grandchildren: Carisa, Dawnetta, Damon, Dain, Dirk, Eric, Pamela, Alyssa, Heidi, Rachel and Matthew; fourteen great grandchildren; siblings: Gene Opland of Moorhead and Floyd (Jean) Opland of Enumclaw WA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Michelle Ann Opland; siblings: Betty (Virgil) Aker and Lloyd Opland and sister-in-law: Marlene Opland.

Celebration of the Life of Lyle Opland: Monday, July 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church - Minot.

Interment will be in Rose Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery - rural Des Lacs.

Visitation: Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home - Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the Rose Valley Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.
