Lyle K. Johnson, 95, Minot, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020, peacefully in his home at The View, a Minot Assisted Living Center where he had lived since 2009.

Lyle was born in Epworth, ND on March 22, 1925 to Robert M. and Verna M. (Slauter) Johnson. He called the family farm NW of Tagus, ND home until 1944.

Lyle was inducted into the US Army on July 19, 1944. He trained for five months in Arkansas and spent his active duty service in Europe during World War II. Lyle was honorably discharged on June 21, 1946. He returned to ND and resided in Hartland from 1946-1950.

Lyle was united in marriage to Elaine A. Mehus on November 22, 1950. They lived together in Hartland for a few months before moving to Minot. Lyle worked for Harry's Tire Service and farmed prior to beginning his long career with Great Northern Railroad on November 24, 1951. After thirty-six years of faithful service as a switchman/brakeman, he retired from Burlington Northern Railroad on March 27, 1987. His grandchildren have fond memories of grandpa coming through the door after returning home from a long work trip. They would all greet him by singing, "I've Been Working on The Railroad". This would always put a big smile on grandpa's face.

Lyle was a member of First Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie and VFW, all of Minot. He also was a 69- year member of the United Transportation Union. He enjoyed tinkering with old farm tractors, old pickups and did some woodworking. He spent time in the outdoors camping, hunting and fishing during his active years. He enjoyed helping his wife Elaine with her puzzles. When they were finished he would custom make frames for each of one of them. Lyle always enjoyed reading a good book. He also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins with Elaine. He was a very generous and kind hearted man with a great sense of humor. Lyle would frequently check in with family members just to see how things were going. He was very proud of his family which was very apparent in his conversations. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

Lyle is survived by his daughters, Carolyn (Bob) Vik, Langdon, ND and Marilyn (Gerald) Stach, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Michelle (David) Goodman, Brent (Kristen) Vik and Terri Stach; great grandchildren Mikaylyn (Andrew) Heth, Erik Goodman, Wyatt Goodman and Alec Erickson; great great granddaughter Lydia Heth; sisters Dorothy Sheldon, Hale, MI and Margie (Norris) Kjellberg, Berthold, ND; brother Dwaine Johnson, Minot, ND; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 70 years, Elaine; son, Larry Keith Johnson; twin grandsons; sister Mildred Kolloen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon, Roger, Robert (Deloris) Johnson and Janice Johnson.
