Obituary

Linda Roose Kaljot, 97, Minot, died Sunday, September 10, 2017, in her home with her family and hospice by her side.

Linda was born March 11, 1920, in Valga, Estonia, the daughter of Juhan and Lena (Vodi) Roose. She was raised and educated in Valga, graduating from high school there in 1938. She studied liberal arts at the University of Tartu in Estonia, and returned to Valga in 1941, after losing her parents. There she worked as a Social Assistant for the City and County of Valga Red Cross. She fled to Germany in September 1944, and spent a few months in Vienna and the German Alps, attending a short course for international students as a wartime hospital aide.

She then worked in Berlin with the Red Cross Estonian Chapter, until she was evacuated to Schleswig Holstein in Germany, working there at a British Army Hospital. From 1945 - 1950, Linda studied at the Christian Albrechts University Medical Faculty in Kiel, Germany, where she met another student, Victor Kaljot, whom she married on August 25, 1949.

They immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City in March 1950. Linda worked as a laboratory and research technician, while studying advanced hematology at Columbia University. After moving to Burlington, Vermont, in 1953, she worked in the University of Vermont Medical School Hospital (Mary Fletcher) laboratory until 1956. Accompanying her husband during his military career as a U.S. Army physician, she devoted herself to caring for her family while stationed in Boston, MA, San Antonio, TX, Oklahoma, San Francisco, CA, and Missouri. While living in San Francisco, she studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute.

The family moved to Minot in 1965. Here Linda worked in the cardiology office of her husband, Dr. Victor Kaljot, as office manager, from 1970 until the time of his death, August 1, 1981.

Linda was very active in volleyball in her younger years, and later took up bowling and tennis. She enjoyed art, painting, original needlepoint, theater, concerts, movies, reading, and maintained an extensive interest in medicine. Also, important to her was the lasting contact with her many friends from various places and countries where she had lived -- from her homeland of Estonia to the ladies bowling league, the Daiquiri Dolls, in Minot.

Most honored to share in her life and survived by : Son, Dr. Kaarel Kaljot (Patricia Lund) of Oakland, CA; Daughters Lena Kaljot, of Washington, D.C., Dr. Lisa Glantz (Dr. Michael Glantz) of Hinsdale, MA, and Tiina Kaljot of Minot; Grandchildren Cassandra and Zachary Glantz (Stephanie An); along with several nieces and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Victor, and siblings, Vambola, Leida, and Meta.

A Public Gathering and Booksigning will take place on November 10, 2017 from 2 to 4pm in the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. A private memorial service will also take place in Idaho at a later date.
