Obituary

Lilas Mae Guttormson, 87, Minot and formerly of rural Ryder died on Sunday, October 16, 2016 in a Minot healthcare center.

Lilas was born on July 29, 1929 on the family farm near Des Lacs to Otis and Tena (Prescott) Wasvick. She was reared on the farm and attended rural school. After her eighth grade graduation, Lilas moved to Minot and was employed by the Coffee Cup Cafe. She had hoped to continue her formal education, but her father needed her back on the farm.

Her brother Orlin returned home after an absence, and to celebrate he took her to a local dance. There she met a dashing young man who became the love of her life. Clarence and Lilas were married on October 20th, 1948. They made their home on a farm in Vang Township of Ward County near Ryder. Life wasn't easy for the newlyweds. The farm, which was purchased from an old bachelor, was without running water or central heat. You can imagine the problems this presented to a young family which soon included three sons. The house remodel in 1959 solved these problems. Two more children arrived in the early sixties, and the family was complete in 1971 with the arrival of a little girl. They retired from farming in 1992 and moved to Minot where they resided at 620 21st St. N.W. She was employed as a hostess at Hardees and Burger King and babysat for several "grandchildren".

Clarence was killed in a motor vehicle accident on October 18, 1993. Later in life, her most important role was that of a loving grandmother. Lilas continued to reside in Minot most recently at Minot Health and Rehab.

Lilas was presently a member of First Assembly of God of Minot. She was a former member of Rose Valley Lutheran Church of rural DesLacs, Zion Lutheran Church of rural Minot and the Ryder Church of God. Lilas was a member of a Ryder area Homemakes group, the Ryder PTA and a Ryder 4-H Club. She especially enjoyed baking, canning, and lefse making and played a mean hand of Skip-Bo with the grandkids.

Lilas' loving family includes her daughters: Karen (Chris) Kelly of Minot, and their children, Jennifer (Casey) Johnson, Jessica, Joshua (Christiana), and Jerrica (Tanner) Bryantt; Kristi Burgess of Minot, and her children Cody and Kayla Dembek, Justin (Mandy) and Chaz Burgess; sons: Larry (Marlene) Guttormson of Minot and their son Ryan; Roger (Deb) Guttormson of Minot, and their children Robert (Kyleen) Guttormson and Zeta Kilbride; David (Barbara) Guttormson of Tioga and their children Scott, Troy, Brooke, and Kelsey; and Mark (Penny) Guttormson of Florida, and their children Nick, Alexa, Marissa and Brianna and 11 great grandchildren; sister: Erma Kolschefski of Wheaton, IL and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lilas was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law: Beverlee Guttormson, grandsons: Daniel and Skylar Guttormson, and Robert C. Dembek, siblings: Alma Hansen, Orlin, Vernon, and Kenneth Wasvick.
