Leonard George Walz, Jr., 67, Newburg and formerly of Minot died on Thursday, July 11, 2013 in his home.
Leonard was born on August 3, 1945 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Leonard and Betty (Techau) Walz. He was reared in Pineville, LA, and in Minnesota, where he graduated from Anoka High School in 1963. After graduation, he attended two semesters of college planning to become a minister but changed careers and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at various air force bases around the world including Louisiana, Iceland, Alaska, Minnesota, and Minot where he specialized as a Radar Technician. Leonard was once married to Susan Oling. Leonard retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1983 and continued living in Minot. Leonard married Pearl "Dalene" Kiddy Dunn on February 16, 1988 in Minot. They made their home in Minot where he worked in maintenance at the Holiday Inn until he started his business, Walz Service and Repair, specializing in lawn care and snow removal. They moved to Newburg in August of 2000, where he continued his business until his health failed.
Leonard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, American Legion and Newburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid supporter and troop leader for his son's and stepsons' troops of the Boy Scouts of America. He especially enjoyed working in the garden, remodeling his house, camping, and spending time with his family. He loved to visit with people and was always happy and upbeat.
Leonard's loving family includes his wife of 25 years Pearl "Dalene" Walz; son: Jeffrey (DeAnn) Walz of Aberdeen, SD, stepchildren: Teresa (Donald) Scott of Sherwood, Christopher (Melissa) Dunn, Charles Dunn and Thomas Dunn all of Minot; grandchildren: Andrea McCann, Katie, Kyle and Austin Walz, Cassandra, Caitlin, Tyler, Ashton, Austin, and Ryan Dunn, Cameren and Cordell Powell, Teasha and Tamra Fiest; brothers: Thomas (Sue) Walz of Nevis, MN, Rudy Walz of St. Louis, MO and Randy (Sue) Walz of Ellsworth, MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter: Kimberly Sue McCann.
Celebration of the Life of Leonard Walz, Jr: Thursday, July 18, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Minot.
Graveside Service: Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery rural Mandan.
Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home Minot.
Memorials are preferred to the Boy Scouts of America.
