Leon G. Power, 74, North Richland Hills, TX, formerly of Minot, died February 23, 2010, in his home.
Leon was born September 23, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota to Dr. Leon G. and Gladys (Vikan) Power. He grew up in Minot, attended Minot High School and graduated in 1953. He completed his education at Carlton College in Northfield, MN in 1957.
Leon was inducted into the US Army on June 10, 1958 and was discharged on June 9, 1960 following his honorable service. Following his discharge, he returned to Minot and gained employment with Catalitic Construction Inc. He assisted with the building of military missile sites in the Minot area following his employment to Cape Kennedy, FL, and throughout the various construction sites throughout the US.
Leon was once married to Melinda Radford. This union came with three children, Kirby, Tray and Carla, who continued to share in his life.
His main interest was the sport of golf, at which he excelled. While attending Minot High School, he finished as a runner-up at the state golf tournament as a freshman and claimed the state title for the next three years. Leon also participated in four national tournaments in his favorite sport and won many tournaments in Minot and around the US during his lifetime. He finished his high school career with nine varsity letters in football, basketball and track combined.
Leon enjoyed traveling to visit his mother, Madge Power and his brother, Jon and his family. He attended all of the high school and college reunions and will be deeply missed by all who were part of his life.
Surviving family includes, brother, Jon (Sharon) Schestler, Minot, sister, Margaret Balerud, North Platte, NE, nieces, Helen Schestler, Jennifer (Clint) Bergan, Sarah (Lyn) Penn and Laurie Balerud; nephews, Charles (Pam) Schestler, Andrew and Leonard Schestler and David, Bruce, and Peter (Carol) Balerud in addition to a number of great-nieces and nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Madge Power, and brother-in-law, Paul Balerud.
Funeral service:
2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at First Lutheran Church Chapel, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Monday, July 5, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
