Leo Hennessy, 87, lifelong Minot resident, died on Sunday, November 10, 2019.
Leo Daniel Hennessy was born on January 28, 1932 in Minot to Leo D. and Josephine (Harmon) Hennessy. He was raised and educated in the Minot area. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 28, 1949. He served in Korea and received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained on September 15, 1950 making him the youngest serviceman injured in combat during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on August 18, 1952 and returned to Minot. He became employed by the Great Northern Railway/Burlington Northern Railroad on September 3, 1952 as a fireman.
Leo married Darlene Alexander on November 27, 1953 in Sidney, MT. They made their home in Minot where he continued his career with the railroad. He retired in 1993 as a locomotive engineer following forty-one years of service. In their retirement Leo and Darlene resided in Minot and spent the winter months in Arizona. Darlene died on March 13, 2012. Leo resided fulltime in Minot until his death.
Leo was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post #26. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers #695 and a former member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge and Eagles Aerie.
Leo's loving family includes his sons: Leo Hennessy (Leslie Tengelsen) of Boise ID and Delwyn (Monica) Hennessy of Grand Rapids, MN; grandchildren: Jenny Hennessy, Seattle, WA and Kristen Hennessy, Boise, ID; siblings: Marion Evenson of Minot, Lois Olson of Chandler, AZ, Joyce Eggert of Minot, Tom (Susan) Hennessy of Bellingham, WA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings: Harley (Susan) Hennessy and Duane (Mary) Hennessy and in-laws: Virgil Evenson, Warren Olson and Gordon Eggert.
Celebration of the Life of Leo Hennessy: November 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Minot Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 753.
Interment will be at the New Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.
Visitation: November 21, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
