Leo Lynn Broughton, 77, Minot, formerly of Powers Lake, died Monday, January 4, 2016 in his home surrounded by his family.
Leo was born December 12, 1938 at Powers Lake, North Dakota, the son of Leonard and Ruth (Hopkins) Broughton. He was raised at Powers Lake and graduated from high school there in 1957. He then attended Wahpeton State School of Science where he studied Automotive Auto Body. He moved to Mohall for a short time, where he was employed at Allen Chevrolet Motors.
Leo entered into active duty service with the U.S. Army on October 10, 1962. He honorably served his country in Korea until receiving his transfer to the Army Reserves in 1964. His service with the Army Reserve unit continued until September 30, 1968, when he was honorably discharged.
Leo was once married to Karen Wutzke. They made their home in California, where they adopted a son, Kevin. Later they moved to Billings, Montana, where Leo continued in the Automotive industry doing autobody work.
Leo was united in marriage to Rebecca "Becky" Melius on December 12, 2003. They made their home in Minot and Powers Lake.
Leo was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Minot, where he assisted with the lawn and groundskeeping duties. He enjoyed restoring old cars, going to antique car shows and doing carpentry work as his second career after moving back to Powers Lake. He enjoyed a lifelong passion for high school and professional basketball. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His loving family includes , wife, Becky Broughton, Minot; son, Kevin (Misty) Broughton, Missoula, MT and their daughters, Katelyn & Addison; Becky's daughter, Jody (Rex) Van Curen, Minot; granddaughters, Lorrie (Shane) Dammous and their children, Bailey & Jayden; Lillie Ackerman and her children, Devin & Cody; sister, Luella (Victor) Hoff of Crosby; several nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; sisters, Myrna Adams, Jean Haxton & Joyce Johnson.
Celebration of Life service
: Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot
Interment:
ND Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, later in the Spring.
Visitation:
At his request there will not be a reviewal, however friends may sign a memorial register book on Friday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials are preferred to the family.
