Obituary

LaVerna Rosalyn Schlag, 92, Velva, formerly of Sawyer, died Monday, January 19, 2015 in a Harvey Nursing Care Center.

LaVerna was born April 22, 1922 at Gardena, North Dakota the daughter of Henry and Marie (Zorn) Hasenwinkel. She was raised and educated in the Gardena and Bottineau area through the 8th grade. She assisted with the operation of the family farmstead after her education. She was united in marriage to Clifford Hovland on June 16, 1943. They made their home on a farm near Sawyer until Clifford's death in 1961. After his death, the family moved into Sawyer on January 1, 1962.LaVerna was united in marriage to Joy Schlag on June 11, 1965 at Sawyer. They lived in Velva and she was employed with Sawyer Grocery, the Velva Cleaners, Velva Elevator and for more than 23 years at Velva Public Schools. She retired in 1996. Joy died August 17, 2009.

LaVerna was a longtime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sawyer, where she was active as Treasurer for the LWML, taught Sunday School and sang in the Church Choir. She was also a member of the Velva Senior Citizens group and Minot VFW Auxiliary.

LaVerna enjoyed quilting, gardening, fishing, bowling, golfing, spending time with her grandchildren, dancing, especially square dancing, along with knitting and crocheting.

LaVerna is survived by her children, Myron Hovland, Lake Stevens, WA, LaVonne Hovland, Beaverton, OR, Karen (John) Kramer, Velva; step-children, Donna (Emil) Wachinski, Minot, Karon Kasprowicz, Velva, Joyleen (Dr Steve) Mattson, Minot, Marlys Vinticinquo, Princeton, New Jersey, and Roger (Nancy) Schlag, Velva; 21 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; sister, Florence Schultz, Bottineau; sister-in-law, Joyce Hasenwinkel, Bottineau and several nieces and nephews.

LaVerna was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Clifford and Joy, along with a brothers, Ewaldt, Ellard & Arnold; sister, Erna and infant, Alice.

Funeral service : Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in St Peter's Lutheran Church, Sawyer.
Interment : Sawyer Community Cemetery, rural Sawyer later in the Spring of 2015.
Visitation: Friday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
