Larry Schmiesing, 78, Minot and formerly of Deering, Norma and Ray died on Thursday, December 18, 2025 in a Minot hospital.
Larry Dean Schmiesing was born on October 8, 1947 in Tracy, MN to Fredrick and Lorraine (Swenson) Schmiesing. He was raised on a farm near Lucan, MN, attended school in Walnut Grove , MN and graduated from Walnut Grove High School. As a young adult he farmed his grandmother's land and went on to be employed as a carpenter.
Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 16, 1971. His primary duty assignment was at Minot Air Force Base where he was a Programs and Work Control Technician in the 91st Civil Engineering Squadron. He received his honorable discharge as a Sergeant on February 1, 1975.
Larry married Teresa Wherley on May 1, 1975 in First Lutheran Church- Minot. They made their home in Minot where Larry was employed at the East and Main locations of Minot Farmer's Elevator. Then he was employed at elevators in Norma, Ray and Deering. He returned to Minot where he attended Minot State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Marketing in 1993. Following graduation, Larry went to work for Clute Office Supplies as an on-the-road salesman for a year. Then he was employed as a civil service employee in building operations at the Minot Air Force Base Hospital. When this position was furloughed, Larry became a data clerk for the 91st Security Police at Minot Air Force Base. He retired in 2011, but had continued to reside in Minot.
Larry especially enjoyed watching television, You Tube and woodworking.
Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years: Teresa; sister: Faye Ann Schmiesing of Alexandria MN and in-laws: Carol "Carrie" Schmiesing, Carol Marie Schmiesing, Karen Schmiesing, John (Nancy) Wherley and Elaine Hiatt and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Fred and Milan.
Celebration of the Life of Larry Schmiesing: Monday, December 29, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Interment will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery – rural Mandan at a later date.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
