Larry Malvin Gerjets , 75, Bismarck, formerly of Minot, died Friday, January 4, 2019 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Larry was born October 2, 1943 at Minot, North Dakota, the son of Malvin and Ethel (Trimborn) Gerjets. He was raised on the family farm in Hastings Township near Maxbass, ND. He attended grade school and high school at Maxbass, graduating in 1961. He furthered his education at Wahpeton State School of Science and later at Minot State College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business and Art in 1967.
Larry was united in marriage to Cheryl Berke on July 7, 1967 at Newburg, ND. They lived a short time in New Town, where they both taught for two years. They moved to Minot in 1969, where Larry taught Art until 1976 and again from 1981-1987. In addition, Larry owned and operated the Dairy Queen and the family lived in Rugby from 1976-1981. They returned to Minot, where he owned and operated Northern Trophy from 1986-1991 and H & R Block from 1991-2005 when he retired. From this union, two daughters, Dawn and Nicole were born. Larry and Cheryl had moved to Bismarck in 2012 to be nearer their daughters and family.
Larry was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a former member of the Ward County Civil Defense Reserve Auxiliary Police, Minot Chamber of Commerce, Minot Lions Club, Phi Delta Kappa and while at Rugby worked for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and Rugby Police. He enjoyed doing various arts and crafts, drawing, painting, wood carving, wood work along with stained glass. He and Cheryl loved to travel and spend time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
His loving family includes , wife of 51 years, Cheryl; daughters, Dawn (David) Hintz, Bismarck, ND; Nicole Gerjets (Paul Calhoun), Bismarck, ND; 5 grandchildren to include, Amanda, Cameron, Kiyoko, Kenji and Kimi; sister, Deloris Penn, Tacoma, WA; in-laws, Larry Lang of Georgia, Rodney (Teresa) McLachlan of Bismarck and Gerald McLachlan of Bismarck; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marlys Lang; brother in law, Noble Penn and sister in law, Sandra McLachlan.
Funeral service
: Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment:
Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:
Wednesday, January 9
th
from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
In lieu of flowers or plants memorials are preferred to Christ Lutheran Church or an organization of the donor's choice.
